« on: June 11, 2011, 12:26:25 AM »
A couple of quick questuions; First of all, are Ikon shocks worth the price tag? and 2nd, is $425 AU a reasonable price to pay for a pair for a cb650?  :)

gday true blue,i think they are,ive had hagons and they were good,im now running ikons with damper control and they are better, the hagons had a bit of a bang/bang too harsh i couldnt adjust out given these only had a spring tension adjustment,,these ikons are better in that ive now got the springs set a little soft but dialed up the damper, the hagons are good though, having damper adjustment makes it a little better .
heres the hagon, just clears the frame, this bikes sold now.

                    the ikon has more clearance.

adjustable damping aswell,i ride a little hard at times,i dont like yank twins threatening me with throttle blips in the twisties,so its bye bye or keep up,my stock size skinny rear tyre only adds to the resulting insult.

pay the extra if your after ride the hagons are a little harsh,i always had mine set on softest, the ikon are better, ive tried both on the same bike,,then again its your riding style, ill dig out my reciept, your price sounds about what i paid.

Thanks for that Dave, I haven't heard any bad reports on the Ikons, hence the reason I'm looking at them, the bike will basically be a shiny work hack but will also get used in the twisties, and as for riding style, I treat it like the girlfriend, ride it hard and fast.

ok so 425 sounds fair, I'm not a racer either but I do like to squeeze as much out of what I ride or drive as I can, in full kit I might weigh 80 kg wringing wet, and I stand just over 6ft tall.

Yeah, what Dave said mate, Ikons (Aussie Koni's) are the best value for money shocks you can buy, full stop. I've run Koni's on just about every bike I've owned, but when I bought my Triumph Rocket III I took the advice of some American "Rocketeers" and bought Progressive 440's ($700 from the US, or $1200 from the Australian distributor) and they're rubbish. I should have bought the Ikon's, and I will, once I sell the Progressives. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

at my last check up at the docs, only 2 weeks ago, I weighed 72kg, I'm a skinny bugger, I have been told that if I stand sideways and poke out my tongue I look like a zipper, but being so skinny helps me out with my work, I'm a diesel mechanic and work on trucks and heavy equipment and I can squeeze myself into places most people can't get anywhere near. Thanks Terry and Dave, I was thinking of going for the cheaper option, dunno the brand but they were about 250 bills, but you fellas have convinced me to go the Ikon route.

Pretty much, I get all the jobs no one else wants to do, so I guess it is a good thing I like a challange.  I just can't wait to get this old girl on the road, it has been years since I had a bike on the road, the last one was an old srx250, and this time I'm even going to get my license, I'm booked in with Q-ride next weekend. :D

yeah good one do the course, especially if youve been of a bike for a while, and extra especially if youve never had a bike licence, get a feel for the bike you learn on,,then get a feel for yours, they are all different,if you ride a Q  RIDE cb400 for the test, your cb650 will feel like a tank after that, those little 400s are a great little bike with great handling.

the bike I think is a yammy 250 scorpio, my 650 definately feels like a tank to ride, I had a couple of squirts on it before I tore it down for its tidy up, just gotta finish reassembling it, make a couple of improvements and paint the tank and side covers, then it is off for rego

if you can get solo seat rego,,its about half price,,you need a solo seat compliance plate fitted,,they need to see a seat no longer than 500 mill long and no rear passenger pegs, ive had a couple of old 500/550 done this way,i have a crappy mdf board with a thin foam and vinyl cover i use,the stock seat but no rear pegs go back on after that, the local bike shop here does the check for 45 bucks,,the guy next door to him wants 145 bucks!!phone around,or come to the gold coast, its unlikley that at a random traffic check on an old classic youll get defected or "pinged" for a too long seat unless the cop knows his stuff,,which they dont,,they seem more concerned with late model race bikes with fender eliminators etc and seem to me to be quite happy to see old bikes pottering around(pottering?yeah right, ill do the best i can without being too unlawfull)and once you pass the obligutory breath test your on your way, good luck with your 650,that would be in the "LAMS" scheme?(learner approved motorcycle scheme).

I'm going to be paying the extra for the twin seat, whats the point of having a nice old bike if you can't have a little lady sitting on the back ;) and yes the 650 does come under the LAM scheme, I made sure of that before I shelled out the whole 650 bucks for it, (screwed the guy down from 900)
