New from Buffalo, new to riding, new to CB750 addiction!
« on: June 19, 2011, 02:46:25 PM »
Hello, I'm Gus from Buffalo, NY.

I picked up a 1974 CB750 4 weeks back, and also my motorcycles license. I've fallen in love with this bike, and started lightly modding her, and have tons of questions.

First off, here she is.

Since I picked it up, I've been riding any chance I get. The bike is quick and handles really well for a fatty, haha.
I've replaced the stock headlight ears, and added the headlight visor for some extra class..

Although, I've run into a major setback as of today. I bought some clip on bars, and installed them without any issues.. I should probably start a different thread for this but if I can get pointed in the right direction that would be great...

Pulling the old wiring through the bars was tough, and adapting the controls to the bars even harder of a task.. All said in done, the bike wouldn't start. I think the fragile wiring in my left and right controls have given me quite the headache. The wires for dim controls and horn for the left set broke, and the wiring has splices. I think the only route is to try and source some new left controls. As far as the right controls go, I was having some issues with the starter grounding itself and trying to start after the bike is already running... I'd like to put a remote start button by the right side of the tank. Also the headlight switch was blowing the fuse, when I'd set the headlight to on. I'd like to wire the headlights to be always on and eliminate the right hand controls totally as I ordered a new throttle to replace the stock one.. The same idea for the kill switch, I'd like that to be by the remote start button... I've tried to find threads where this had been done, but haven't got too far, even with the wiring diagram for my bike... I'm novice to wiring, but currently I believe I just opened a can of worms with these clipons :-(

Anyway... I'm trying not to get discouraged as the electrical on these machines are somewhat basic.. Just need a plan and some motivation to keep on keeping on.

Gus

Welcome,  seems like your best bet may be to find new switches unless you are really adept at reading schematics and repairing the controls.  The previous owner probably had  to extend the wires to put those high rise handlebars on,  hence the splices. You should be able to download the manual on this site and there are plenty of people on this site to help you out...Larry

Thanks for the reply.

I've hunted for some new controls which might be my best bet. Specific to the stock controls, can I vary between model and year? And if so, by how much?

I'd like to eliminate what I can off the controls and keep the basics; dim, turn, horn. Run/Kill and start I'd like to get away with remotely...

I'll read the diagrams over more, and surely have questions.

The controls are already basic, not much to eliminate.  There is a section on the forum for bikes and parts wanted-put a post there, hopefully someone will be able to able you out at a reasonable cost..Larry

Welcome to the forum! Nice 750 you found there. Just to help you out check out this link to find shop manuals

Also, if you ran the wires through the inside of the bars you may have chafed a wire causing a short. I did this when I first installed my clubmans and had no idea until I changed my bars again.

THe switches did change a few times through the years. ANd with it, little wiring changes. BUt you can adapt others to work, just takes a little more though into the wiring.  I would try to find the exact ones if your not interested in wiring creativity..
