CL350 clutch problems really need help with this
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:40:56 AM »
I got this '72 CL350 that I think I'm having a problem with. And it needs to be out of my garage today so I'm really rushed here.

I pulled the sprocket cover off which also houses the clutch mechanism to disengage the clutch. I put it all back on after replacing the clutch cable and I tested it, and it seems to work but then it sounded like something slipped in the mechanism. Now it doesn't feel like the part is hitting or even touching the clutch lifter rod because I can pull the handle all the way down, and no resistance at all.

Is it possible to push that rod in to much via the lever at the handlebars that something breaks inside the crankcase and it will come loose? Because I can easily pull on that clutch lifter rod and it will slide out which doesn't seem right. So I'm afraid it got pushed in to much  :-\

The clutch adjusting screw doesn't seem to turn at all, and I see why because from the inside of the cover, I can see that it sits in a slot on the inside. So it CANT turn. It must sit in there like that though, right?

I'll upload some pictures in a little while. I greatly appreciate any help and opinions!

I'm not completely following what you wrote, but I had an issue with my cb350 twin where a full pull on the clutch lever would cause the release mechanism inside the cover to over rotate.  Check to see if it has over rotated and gotten stuck.  If it has, then turn it back to position, reinstall, and follow the factory adjustment procedure before you pull the clutch lever all the way back.  Also, adjust the cable so that you can't pull the clutch lever to the point that you over-rotate the disengagement mechanism.

Thats kind of what it felt like. It over rotated. But I already pulled it off and set it all back in place how it seems it should. And when I pop the cover back on and pull the lever, shouldn't it hit against the clutch lifter rod a bit thus giving me resistance at the lever even before doing any of the cable adjustment? Here are some pictures of the mechanism and its parts

Hahaha.....I feel like an idiot now. Ok so I was worried something got messed up, but now I realize I forgot to turn the clutch adjusting screw counterclockwise to push the mechanism against the lifter rod. Now that its up against it, (tada!) there is that resistance at the lever I wanted  ;D

I made the same mistake on my CL the first time I adjusted the clutch too.  I adjusted like a 750, little did I know that it's the complete opposite.

Funny thing is, that screw was kind of stuck. And so when I first tried monkeying with it, it would not turn so I thought it was at that point in the manual where they say, "Turn counterclockwise until resistance is felt" yet it was all loose, little did I know I was just being to gentle with it lol :-X
