stock 2 into 1 exhaust rebuild? 1972 CB500
« on: June 12, 2011, 06:46:23 PM »
I'm wondering if you can rebuild the 2 into 1 exhaust.  The reason I ask is because the baffles (and other guts) look like they are held in with a single rivet at the end of the muffler.

I've attached a picture of my bike for reference.  It's dark outside right now so if more pictures are needed I'll post them tomorrow.

:) If I ask a question and forget to post model and year my bike is a '72 CB500 :)

Yup, Jardine or possibly Mac... The one rivet deal is fine if they aren't all rotted out. Most aftermarket exhaust baffles weren't held in by much if any more, my kerker is one bolt, that I know began life as a rivet. I haven't seen replacement baffles for these, but with some redneck engineering and a 6 pack (or maybe a bag of  ;D) anything is possible! Some good threads on building baffles here somewhere. But most definitely not a stock exhaust. And as always, if it ain't broke... Don't fix it!

I've got a similar looking system on my CB750K5. Is that stock headers with aftermarket exhaust, or is the whole thing aftermarket?

They are all one piece. Now that I know they aren't stock I'm considering chopping them up so that I can put a replaceable glas pack on them.

It's a shame to loose the chrome though but the reason I'm considering it at all is one set is rotten and needs a small patch welded over a hole.
