Timing Mark cb550k
« on: June 07, 2011, 05:56:54 PM »
Hi,

I just need some clarification Please.  The TDC mark is to the left of the T.  The Firing mark is between the T and the F.  The marks to the right are for advanced timing?

The T and the F are labels for the two timing marks nearby.

The left is TDC, the right is Fire spark timing.  The ones to the far right are full advance.  The strobe should show alignment between these over 2500 RPM-ish.

Arghh... looks like the valve cover is coming off.  I set the camshaft to the F mark (between the T and the F)

I statically timed my dyna S ignition using a multimeter to the right most advance timing marks.  Success!! the engine started up!  I bought a timing light initially and haven't opened the package.  Should i use the timing light to continue fine tuning the ignition or should i return it (i thought it was kind of expensive)

'As far as I know', the only timing you can do with the Dyna S is statically @ the max. advance mark.
You could strobe it with the gun but the advance rate vs. rpm you observe may have nothing to do with the actual factory advance 'curve' for your bike as the Dyna S is a 'one size fits all ' devise and not tailored to your bike's advance curve .... or am I wrong ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

You can time it statically or dynamically, the only difference is you time it a full advance to the full advance mark instead of at idle to the "F" mark.  As with points, timing with a strobe just makes it easier to do more quickly and accurately.
