"I was going to get new ones, but I saw a comment on here somewhere that said that one way to tell a true unrestored bike from a restored one is the wear on the footpeg rubber!"

not necessarily true....not every owner has dragged a peg or laid their bike down.....
if the footpegs on my '75 550F bike were replaced prior to my purchase in 1994 I wouldn't know, but the ones on it have not been replaced by me and they are pristine...

also...and open for discussion....it's debatable about "originality " and "survivor " definitions concerning replacing items with original, factory identical parts.....
The AMCA allows nos  part replacement without denying originality or survivor status......
However, obviously, a brand new shiny nos part on a "patina" bike " is a problem....

"The chain doesn't have a master link.  The fuel line has been replaced, but the carb overflow lines were original when I got it but they crumbled when I removed the float bowls to service the carbs.  I have the remains in a box, but used new ones.
The tires appeared original when I got the bike!  Rock hard, had to cut them off.  Here is a pic of the old and new tire:"

then I would say that chain is the original factory supplied chain. In my 550F owner's manual, it talks about servicing the "endless" chain. Maybe yours does also.
Many of those didn't survive because back in the day, patching a back tire tube in the middle of nowhere was 10 times easier if you had removed a link and added a master link for easy chain removal.
Aslo, I don't think anyone sells endless chains....

Tires...original tires are identified by a sticker on the bike and the owners manual stating tire brand and size....at least on my '75....once again, not familiar with K0 500's....

"Ok now I'm self conscious about riding it!"

lol....well, it's a choice. My opinion?....it's not right or wrong. It's a choice. Isn't that what this hobby is all about?
Who wouldn't want to ride and show off that bike.
Who wouldn't want to preserve and maintain as much originality and survivor character it has and trailer queen it.

It can be a friendly discussion respecting both points of view....or it can be an arrogant argument....I prefer the former.

I'd be a fool to ride my bike around with the chance of destroying parts that are unobtainable....the satisfaction I get from displaying it to people that are amazed ..and shocked and appreciative of its originality and survivorship are all I need.....

either way, that is a nice bike.....beautiful mustang....

I also know a dealer that says he has nos starlight side covers....I think I heard him right....they do not have the decal....
he is not wholesale......

"The Honda Motor Co decals seem to be in Honda's promotional pictures of the Starlight Gold model.  The left side cover is original and has the sticker.  I have ordered a sticker for the right side cover. Shockingly, someone has some for sale on ebay."

Changing footrest rubbers was considered a service item when i was in the trade, split, damaged or loose just change them. Would you consider riding with a damaged fork gaiter if it was split just cos its original?

Here are the ones I found.  Light color:

Glad you found a nice early model that was cared for, enjoy riding it and the friendships and experiences it opens up owning it.

Thanks David!

I hope you enjoy riding your bike;show it off on the road  ;)

Thanks for all of the kind words and info.  The members of this forum have so much valuable information and insight, I truly appreciate it.

I'm planning to ride it in a vintage bike rally today (https://www.idahovintagemotorcycleclub.org).   I had thought about restoring it to a more perfect state, but hearing from everyone I think it's best left with the patina.  Maintaining originality, but taking it for a ride every now and then is the plan.

Changing footrest rubbers was considered a service item when i was in the trade, split, damaged or loose just change them. Would you consider riding with a damaged fork gaiter if it was split just cos its original?
Haha, you are right of course.  I think I still have PTSD from the Mustang judging crowd.  They would definitely rather see a worn part than a replacement, unless the replacement part was NOS and exactly date coded for that car.  My father in law restored a 1971 Corvette 454 4-speed to show level, and he said that the Corvette world was even more stringent!

His description is wrong as they were only 500K0 and originaly they were NOT laquerd over, just stuck on.
I first made some printed on acetate after scanning a removed sticker then using a pixel program to fill in the missing bits but then sent the file to the Canadian firm who no longer advertiseHonda decals but do them if you email them and had several sets made.
If you want i will try and find the file for you

Curious what tire the bike had and the new one you ordered, they appear to be the same.

I love old Mustangs, especially fastbacks!  I have a '70 Corvette and yes, the purists can get a little nuts about replacement aftermarket [cheapass] parts!  There are NCRS [National Corvette Restorers Society] Technical Information Manual & Judging books...

I would never have mine judged by them!!

All this talk about survivor 500 has spurred me to post a couple of pics. It's from Colorado Springs and have been in touch with the last owners. It's Jul 71 manufacture and was a repossession after about a years life and then a husband and then wife owned it. They had crash bars and bar mounted fairing fitted.
Original tyres (but back is pretty worn) and continuous chain.
Now shows 4886 M.
I'll get it out on the road and take some better pictures in a while.

I remember seeing the post of that 500 when the wife posted on fb trying to figure out how much to sell it for. It was all dirty. It looks good.

Beautiful CB500 with very nice green color and good looking gauges!

Fantastic if still unrestored stock.

CB750 K2, non original K1 836 engine, it has a lot of chrome on it now but I have more, how many would be less likely to want a bike with many stock but chromed parts?
Example, rebuilt and chromed swingarm with chain guard, brake strut, rod and hardware. Also sidestand with a sweet 4-2 hooker header.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
