79 CB650 cafe project
« on: June 14, 2011, 12:51:49 PM »
OK so I bought this bike being "winterized", big mistake. I get the bike home and put oil in the engine and charge the battery. What happens you wonder? Oil pouring from the stator cover and the bike doesnt start. When I pulled off the stator cover i oticed that the rubber grommet had been crushed. After searching for a new grommet and coming up empty handed i ordered a new stator. After installing that and putting more oil in the engine I try to start it up again and the same thing happens. Pulling the cover off again, I noticed that there is a plug that is sticking out of the engine farther than I think that it should be. After hours of looking onn line I determine that the plug is installed backwards. So I turn it around, more oil, and turn the key and wow, no more oil leak. So to the bike not starting issue. I find that the main power cable is grounded to the frame, so I fix that. I then determine that both CDI boxes are burnt up as well. So after ordering those, they are expensive, and installing them I try again. The bike tries to start but still nothing. So I pull the carbs to rebuild and notice that the choke flaps are hitting the carb bodies. So i rebuild the carbs and fix the choke issues. After butting everything back together I turn the key and it starts. Runs a little rough so I dropped it off the get the carbs set correct. Once I get it back I will start the cafe racer convertion. And I am now finding that there are no seat and rear tail sections for this bike so I will be making everything by hand. So keep checking for updates to come.

If you use the attachments option don't forget that there is a maximum file size limit for each picture, plus a aggregate limit if posting mulitiples at the same time.

If the files are too large you won't get an error message, the post just won't work. I have a separate folder set up on my computer where I save pictures in smaller sizes for posting to the board.

A good friend of mine has a pretty awesome 79 cb650. check out his site chinonthetank.com (a bike blog he runs) and under categories click cb650. He has a lot of great information on there that might be helpful. Im also just about to finish my 80 cb650 which will have a project thread soon.

Your bike looks nice, excited to see the build. Good luck.

So I finally got my bike back from the shop. And of course I couldnt just not work on it already. So I changed my brake master cylinder resivor and started getting the clubman bars on the bike. I am wondering about the clubman bars. Has anybody that used them had an issue with the throttle? After putting everything together and checking, the throttle was really tight. After checking everything I came to the conclution that the paint was put on to thick. So going with this thought I pulled out the 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. After about an hour of sanding and trying the throttle I got to a place where it works. And being up at 4:30 a.m. and it being around 11:30 p.m. and a half hour drive home I decided to call it a night. Ill try to post some pics...

OK today I got the BMW bar end turn signals installed. Still have the wiring to do but at least they are on the bike. Started the bike up to check if anything needed to be adjusted and broke the throttle sleeve, bummer  :( So I just ordered a new one. So it looks like tomorrow I'm going to finish up wiring the turn signals. I have to replace the rear brake light switch so I will do that also. I have new wheel bearing and seals coming along with new fork seals so I will probably just tear everything apart. Was hoping to ride a little tomorrow but that's not going to happen.

Today was a busy day, 7 hours of working on the bike. I have completely disassembled the front end. Checked the bearing of the staring stem to make sure they were not to messed up. They were good so i pulled them apart and re greased them. I removed the seat and started working on cafe seat. Started by making everything up in cardboard just to make sure what I was thinking would look OK. Then I started Making up the wood framing for everything. Picked up my fiberglass this evening and my foam padding and new vinyl. Cant wait to see what tomorrow brings to get the seat finished...

Tonight, since I have my daughter and I cant get to the shop to work on the bike, I decided to finish working on the seat. I picked up marine grade padding and vinyl and got to work. This is what I ended up with. I know its not the greatest but its my first time so...

OK so tonight I replaced the bearings in my front wheel, and replaced the fork seals. Hopefully I can put the front end back together sometime this week and get back to riding. Just a HUGE thank you to everybody that has posted stuff about front forks. They scared the crap out of me but after reading on here about it I had to confidence to give a shot...nothing to it. Again thanks.

OK everybody, I have a question that I hope that somebody can help with. After getting my bike back on the road there were no issues. I found that my new fork seal was leaking so I pulled the bike back apart. while waiting for parts I installed a new rear tail/brake light. Now my oil/stop light stays on. I did some searching and found that if I take off the new light and put the old one back on the light goes off. With the new light hooked up it works correctly. Tail light works, brake light works, license plate light works. The only thing that is different is that the new light is an a fiberglass license plate frame that I made. So can anybody help???

Here is a picture of the bike completed for now. Once it gets cold it will all come apart and do a complete job on it, but I just want to ride while its not freezing...

So yesterday I hit the interstate and was driving along good. Got to a spot were there was no traffic, and just wanted to get a little speed on the bike to see how it responded. When I hit 85 - 90 mph i got a terrible wobble. I am thinking of putting a steering stabilizer on it. Can anybody help me with the stoke that is required for these bikes and where the best place to purchase one from. Any help is well appreciated.

A terrible wobble is probably caused by bad bearings...either wheel or steering bearings.  Have you changed them?  I see in your thread you mentioned checking them...
