Picking up CB750 Friday
« on: April 18, 2006, 10:19:17 AM »
Hi everyone, just joined the board and wanted to say watch out for this newbie.

I think it's funny how sometimes bad things can turn out good.  I had a GS550 that someone else wanted more than me ;)  A guy here at work has stepped forward and is selling me his '76 CB750 SS for dirt cheap, we're talking check how much change is in your pocket.  Yeah, dirt cheap.  This will be my third bike.  It has a full fairing on it, don't know what color or really anything about it other than he started it up 3 months ago.  I'm guessing it's going to need the regular TLC any non used bike requires.  The GF said that if I didn't get a bike soon she was going to sell her Sportster.  I don't know about you, but when a chick says something like that to me, it makes me want to drop to my knee.

The first bike was an 82 CX500, which I still use as my pit bike at the drag races.  I brought it back from the dead on the first time of owning it.  Honda's just won't die.

I haven't jumped into the forums head first, just been dipping the toes, but it's looking like all my questions have been asked and answered.  So I'm saying this now, thanks.

Haven't made it down the 1320 on a bike yet.  Let me rephrase that.  Not down the dragstrip.  I have a 56 Ford that I some how managed to get into the high 10's.  Here's a pick of the old set up, before the new motor and tranny brake.  Yeah, I know I lit up the red light, but it was just a time trial.

Thanks, it was another one of those projects that started out as a neglected potential that has finally started showing it's true colors. Now that I'm thinking about it, as much as I end up putting into these "neglected potentials"  I should probably just buy something new.  Nahh, where's the fun in that?

Picked the 750 up on Friday, put a new battery in it and it started right up.  Fixed the siezed brakes, lubed the chain, new oil and filter and it ran incredible.  So as I tend to do w/ things, I've improved the front end.  Yesterday I put a '76 Goldwing front end on it.  We were just sitting in the garage looking at the bike, talking about how nice it would be to have a dual discs on the front like the Gold Wing.  We weren't for sure if it would work, but at least we would give it a shot.  Yup, it works.  Now I have the nice gloss black forks, and dual disc.  Right now I'm enjoying the rat nest behind the headlight, but now that I have the wiring diagram, it shouldn't be as bad.

I haven't done a search yet, but could some that has done this front end swap tell me any potential problems I should watch out for.  Thanks ahead of time.

This is w/ my phone, I'll get better pics tonight w/ a real camera.

I was really, really suprised that it even worked.  I'm used to working on Fords, and the simplicity of the swap is something I'm still realling from.  I'm just really lucky to have someone smiling on me and allowing all this to happen.  I wasn't for sure if the swap was going to work (didn't check out the forum).  Thankfully it did.  It's been one crazy week.

Congrats on the front-end swap.
Mine WAS going well, untill I had to waste an entire weekend doing brakelines, making trips back and forth to the parts store, and then finding out my "new" master cylinder was a piece of crap. Awiting new master , and will get ready to start swearing again... ::)

Post some updated pics of that scoot when you get around to it....

The parts run is never a fun thing.  For me it seems like as soon as I right a list and get to the parts store, I realize that I forgot the list.  :P

I left the orginal single disc master cylinder on the bike, this was probably a bad thing, huh?  I just like the metal master cylinder and didn't want to swap out that ugly UV damaged GW one.

If you do some searching, I am sure you can find a 5/8 bore master that looks "old" , to keep the vintage feel for the bike. I tried this , and ended up with a master that pushed more air than it did fluid  ::) . Just ordered a new remote style today.

Good luck on the project.....

Will do, in the mean time I'm just happy to be back on a really good bike.  W/ the front end swap I was able to get the speedometer working again (broken cable), as happy as I was to see what speed I was going, I forgot to fill up, finally go to try out the reseviour  :P

This is w/ the camera phone again.  I really like the black forks that came off the GW, much better look, and they handle great.  I've only had it since Friday and I think things are coming along nicely.  New tires are showing up sometime this week.  The tank badges are going on at lunch.

Also a side note, we trimmed about an 1" off the brake light cover.  Amazing how much better it looks, but you can't see it in this photo.

what's up, i'm all kinds of new here, but my love affair with the sohc-4 goes back a long way. my dad had 4 or 5 750's when i was a kid, and when i got the the age that i didn't start crying when he started it up (about 1 1/2 from what he tells me) he would put me on the tank and cruise me around the block. 25 years later and i just bought my first honda off e-bay. it's a 72 cb 500 four with 16,000 original miles. i only payed $375 for the bike, and all i had to do was rinse out the gas tank and put gas in it and i was on the road. the tank is a little beat up, and somebody shaved the emblems off and painted it and the side covers silver. mister sand blaster has a thing or two to say about that. anyway, now i ride whenever the weather allows me and me and pops wrench on the bike on the weekends. i'm having trouble locating some murcury tubes to synch the carbs with, also i want to trash the 4:4 exhaust and get a 4:1 header just like my dad's old bike. it's a rolling work in progress, i will take some pics and post them, i've given up the idea of getting a NOS tank and im just going to go custom on the old one, i'm thinking candy apple green with an airbrushed celtic knot theme (im of predominately irish decent)  anyway, i was pleased to find a lcub devoted to these kick ass bikes. any tips you veterans have would be most appriciated. till then, keep them wheels a spinnin and watch out for everyone else.

If you don't have one already, you can get the Clymer service manual for these bikes..  They have instructions on how to make your own carb gauges for syncing all 4 carbs at once- I think they use like baby food jars filled with colored water, and tubing.

Get some Morgan Carbtunes from eBay (I paid £20 for mine) - they don't use mercury but use steel rods in the tubes. Search for "Carbtune" on here and look at the recommendations from the people who have tried the various types.

If the 4-4 is any good, you will find someone on here who wants them!

hey thanks for the advice guys, i'll look into getting some tubes. the 4:4 is in kinda bad shape, rust up near the front of the pipes, and one pipe has a hole about the size of a bic lighter just before the muffler, and it gives it a kind of strange out of sequence popping sound when it idles. here's another one for you veterans, on the way home from work tonight my front brake started dragging on me like a sonofa#$%*. i got it to my brothers house, and we adjusted the side to side on the caliper, but it still drags a little. is it just because the bike is 34 years old? should i just wait till the pads wear down?  it squeels like a banshee at cruising speeds with no pressure on the brake handle, and pumping the brake doesn't seem to do much to stop it. if ya'll dont have an answer for me then me and my dear ole dad will just have to rip it apart sunday and find the problem.

can't help with the brakes but for a poor mans carb tune I used a length of garden hose held to the carby inlet and the other end to my ear, not spot on but you can sure tell the difference between the carbs by the sound

Can't remember if you said that you'd had the caliper apart.  If not, you need to clean out the insides and especially around the square-section o-ring seal. Clean carefully in the square-section grove on the inside of the caliper as crap in here jams the piston and will not allow the brake fluid pressure to return the pad to the "rest" position.  This should also cure the squealing (did for me) which is caused by very light pressure of the pads on the disk.

Clean the calipers, it's the second thing I do when I get a new, old bike.  (first thing to do is get it started).  Then I'll go thru clean the calipers and flush the brake fluid.  Don't get me wrong, I know if I don't like the ride I can always jump off, but I would prefer to know that I've done everything I can to stop by my own means.

An experiment to try,
when the wheel is dragging , take a rag to catch fluid,
and loosen the brake hose a little at the master cyl,
let a few drips come out,and retighten.
                   {without touching brake lever}
now push bike. if it rolls free, it is the master cyl.
        relief hole plugged.
If bike still drags, it is calipers.sticking
you will have to clean/rebuild whichever it is....
                    Hope it helps

Only had the bike now for a week, and I would say it's going pretty well.  Put the GW master cylinder on, and I love the new brakes.  I put a new 120-90-19 Splitfire on the front.  Going to do the rear tomorrow.  I just have to say that I am in love with this bike.  Absolutly amazing.
