Fuel strainer screen
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:58:33 PM »
Hello all finally have some time to start going through the 550 I got a few weeks ago and decided to get the gas tank out of the way . The tank looks pretty rust free a little bit of sediment when I drained the gas out of it. So now I wanna check the fuel strainer screen and where is it. Looking at the schematic is a bit hard for me to tell where it is. Here are some pictures the white tube thingy in the gas tank how does that come out seems a bit loose but didnt want to pull it out. . The two screws on the petcock are locked in real good going to shoot them with some stuff to loosen them up and see how it looks in there. Also the fuel lines coming out of the tank and running to the carbs are rock hard I think they should be more softer so going to replace them too.If anyone can help a noob out would be much appreicated.

Thanks

After you remove the fuel on off res valve the strainer should pull out the same hole it may have a little lip on the outside you can pry loose it may be stuck go around the edge with a thin blade ;)

The fuel line is an odd size - 5.5mm I think. Only bike shops generally have it, and this size isn't used on new bikes so many bike shops don't stock it.
The strainer assembly should just pull out.
Something is strange with your petcock though. One of the intake holes should have a brass tube in it sticking up a couple of inches. This gives you the reserve: the main intake is through the tube and runs out when the tank level gets to the top of the tube. The reserve intake is open and can get all the fuel available in the tank.

The screen and brass tubes are up inside the tank, all those parts are connected to the plastic  plug.  Just like a 400 four.  You need to work that white plastic plug out.  It can be a bear to get out but that is where the screen is, and it is highly likely it is torn...Larry

Check the plastic surface, I think your filter broke off.

Well got it out and so much for not having rust in the tank lol as you can see by the pictures. When I shake the tank I can hear dry sediment sliding around. Will have to think about what to do just wanted to get it running to drive for a few months till I started the tear down and rebuild on it. Was going put on another type of tank (matchless g50 tt). Probally will just do a few rinses on it to clear the crap out and fill it up with gas will see if that works to get my by the next month or so.

Ok next problem finally found a new tachometer cap should be here in a few days so I decide to take the old one off (go impact driver). Might be hard to see in the picture but the metal is all chewed up on the bottom of it. I pulled the gear thingy out and found some small metal shavings from the tach in it. So now I wonder what this chewed up metal did to the engine?
