Never talked to the man, but judging by the company of people here, I certainly missed out!

My computer had been sick and I had to fix it. And I got real busy on some project so I was not able to come  here for a while and when I did, I heard Uncle Ernie has passed, What the hell!  I sure miss his posts at Bikes and Babes. He had such great collection.  Rest in Peace, Uncle Ernie....

Geez  I just caught up with this news, it's desperately sad. I loved Uncle Ernie's collections of old photos, they kept me enthralled in bygone times for many an hour. I'll miss his posts so full of a life lived to the full and great experiences. RIP Paul. :(

I was going through an old post the other day and saw a post from UE in there. In a way its like he is still here.
To the mods..... when a member is inactive for a certain period of time their account is inactivated right, and posts go back to "guest"? Is there a way to keep UE's account active?

Man.....I just noticed this tonight and just finished reading through it. I never really talked to him here and I think I might have pissed him off back in the past (I probably deserved it though). Sad news for sure. I hate  hearing that his wife left him. I've been there and done that. To some it may be a reason to party down but to others....not so much. I would have to say its one of the hardest things to deal with in life. RIP Uncle Ernie.

I too just saw this thread, and was moved to read all the other responses and available links. Funny how in this day and age you can like someone strongly just due to a pm or 2 without even meeting them. I want to say that I liked and respected Ernie. Rest in peace Unk!

little over a year now since Uncle Ernie passed. I was talking to a friend here that use to live out west and we were talking about side car rigs. He said he and his wife had run into a fellow out there in a side car rigged bmw back in the 80's. I think the picture I had was of Paul back in the 80's and I sent it to him. He's pretty sure it was the fellow he met. Really small world.
Uncle Ernie still ranks at the top of best people I've met in the motorcycle world or world in general.
Hope the rest of you are well as I've not checked in for a while/

Welcome back Robert. Ernie was unique in a very good way.

Yeah Robert I can see it in the trees and soon smell it in the air. I have some work to do inside, work on the bike, and of course ward off the chill with a bit of sour mash.  ;) ;) ;)

The ability of one man not only to affect so many but to continue to do so on an internet forum is astounding. Ernie once sent me pictures of sculpture he had done. They were similar to his best posts, evocative and genuine - a fleeting window into his personal and unique world view. A remarkable person. I wish I could have met him in person.

Dave, I ain't heard from you in a while and I've been slack in staying in touch.
I hope the arts are treating you well and you've had a great summer on the lakes.
My wife and I have put a lot of miles on the bike together this year and hope to do a few more
before old man winter shuts us completely down for ....2 weeks... ;D
I was thinking about what you wrote and here's a thought for you. It seems that we actually may
get to know people a bit better through the internet forums. I mean, how long a conversation do you
have with your "friends" who live nearby on a regular basis. Do you have the same interest with your
neighbors as you do with your internet frens? Might be why when Rosemary and Paul arrived from England
this summer and spent about 4 days total with Tracey and I we had the best time with friends. Friends I'd made through the internet but a friendship that was already 4 or 5 years old
by the time we met. Same with Uncle Ernie, we conversed on the forums and when we met him
he was just what he seemed to be. A heck of a good fellow and down to earth. Though a tree hugger he was friends with a logger. ;) We made fast friends and both Tracey and I looked forward to our visits with
Uncle Ernie (Paul). That's why I hope we all do the things we intend to do and nothing is put off when it is
possible to do it.

My best to you and yours, Robert

...lest we forget.

I've told this story before, and I will tell it again.

I only knew Uncle Ernie casually from his posts on SOHC.net when I was living in Baton Rouge, LA. After finding out I was moving to Asheville in the fall of 2008, I PM'd UE and told him we should  hook up. Sadly it was one of those rendezvous’s you never get around to making. Fast forward to the spring of 2009 and I see a craislist post for a w650 that will be on display at a yard sale. So I mosey over to this yard sale on a nice spring Saturday, and in addition to the w650, this guy is 'getting rid of some stuff'. I think I dropped about 100 bills on a stash of hood ornaments, tools and old motorcycle mags. We talked motorcycles for about an hour that day, and I never made the connection that who I was talking to was Uncle Ernie from the SOHC forums. After his death, and looking at pictures of his w650 (exquisite aluminium tank) I made the connection.

Any hooter, this is one of Paul's hood ornaments (they are still his) I bought from him that Saturday.

I guess it might be more appropriately mounted on an old Chrysler or Packard...or a hotrod of some sort. But it has added some character to my 95 Nissan Pickup. Either way something tells me Paul is smiling a little bit knowing that ornament is 'in the wind' again!

Any hoo,
Do you have an extra Uncle Ernie Hood ornament you'd like to sell?

@rocking...Hahaha...you tread on dangerous ground my friend. I am sitting here in my office looking at the Goddess of Speed on my window seal.

Make your way down to Asheville and stop in for a visit and maybe you can talk me in to parting with one!  ;)
