Just picked up my first cb750
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:28:15 AM »
1976 cb750f
2k on a the rebuilt engine (ran very strong) 66k miles on the rest of it.
Mac 4 into 1(with a bit of rust on the headers, havn't looked for holes yet.)
Brakes are a little woody (tho i just came offa zrx1200 with 6pots so i may just be ignorant).
None of the lights work at all and it won't hold a charge. (Has a new stator) It had Honda hardbags and a trunk on it (which I also got, they look almost new) and the electrical was fine while that was all on.  A friend of the guys did a mickey mouse wiring job on it and since then, won't hold a charge and the blinkers/headlight won't work. (I coulda swore I saw the tail light flicker when he opened the seat, so I'm thinkin there is just a short and it's grounding out).

500 bucks and I drove it home no problems (other than no lights)

So, the full story on this bike.
Some guy bought it new in 1979, I have the original bill of sale.  He sold it in 1998 (have all the paperwork).  The owner died (unknown how, not related to the bike) in 2008  after having the work done below.  His mother luckily had the work done to become executrix of his estate and the bike is specifically listed on it.  She gifted the bike to a co-worker in Oct 2009 who who put like 100 miles on and never registered it.  He put it up for 1200 on CL, said a few people looked at it but no joy. (likely due to the electrical issues and having posted the ad in march) the add expired, and I was looking thru some old ads trying to find a cb750, sent him an email to see if he still had it, which he did.  Went over last night to look at it, and we got along pretty good, nice people.  He blurts out "Tell ya what, I got it for free. I'll charge the battery over night, and if you come back tomorrow, you can have it for 500."

Done deal :)
I'd still prefer to have my ZRX not have been hit by a car.  But karma appears to have given me a break.

Just did a heavy walk around/probe and went over the most recent service records (and the original bill of sale from 1979):
There is like, a full printed page more besides this.  Over 3k in work easily
I also have what appears to be a phone book thick folder with every service record since 1998.

Dyna III ignition and coils (woo)
fork seals look new, tires look new last year
New 8mm spark plug wires
New wire harness
new chains all around (primary, cam, 630 hybrid o-ring  :o)
New sprockets (obviously)
Looks like the whole valve train was redone
new rings and rebored
everything rubber has been replaced
all bushings replaced (swingarm, chassie, etc)
braided oil lines...

Very nice retro cruiser and an even better price 8).   The light problem could easily be the connector from the fairing to the wiring harness, make sure it is tight...Larry
