Cb550 carb gasket ONLY kit?
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:38:04 AM »
I am looking to rebuild my carbs, and have found a good price on the full kit (including jets etc) from a link on this forum.  But after reading all I can about this - I realize that many people have issues with the quality of the parts they get with these cheaper kits, and that I may not really need to replace the metal parts anyway.

Does anyone know of a source for just the o-rings and gaskets for a 1976 CB550K (087a carbs - same dimensions as 022a)?  Unfortunately, my local Honda dealer is in no way friendly or helpful, and I couldn't determine a parts number form the fiche for just these kits.  maybe I have to order OEM part by part???

Thanks in advance.

They used to come as a set.
Parts no was originally 16010-323-004 and the set was later modified (16010-323-305 and 16010-323-315.
Such a GASKET SET will cost you $12.43 for each set.
A set (for one carb) contains:
O-ring for float valve,
O-ring for main jet,
O-ring for drain bolt,
O-ring for float bowl,
one or two(*) O-rings for T-joint fuel supply pipe
Gasket for the top lid of the carb.

(*) Some models like mine (500K2) have two O-rings on either side of the T-joint fuel supply pipe. Later 550 models may have only one on either side. I'm not sure about this. Maybe others know.

Thanks so much!  Looks lik it's time to do battle with my local Honda dealer :)

Just so I'm clear - do these kits not include the the float gasket/o-ring?  The one that actually seals the bowl to the body?

Appreciate the help.

Yes, it does and I modified previous post. Please report how many O-rings there are for the T-joint fuel supply pipe in each set. Just curious.

I bought mine off of feebay. $56 delivered for 4 OEM Honda kits. Buy from a But It Now auction. Worked like a charm.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-nos-CB500-CB550-CB-550-K-550K-500-carb-gasket-kit-/300567402914?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45fb3699a2

Looks like the guy gave up the free shipping on his kits.

Appreciate for the link Ron. I'm going to shoot for OEN if possible. Seems some people have issues with 3rd party parts. I'll check this place out and see if they have the goods.

Thanks

You also get the gasket kit from UK; http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-model/

Usually the jets (all brass parts) are OK, but i clean them well. Carful not to widen the tiny holes in the jets. A hair from a steel brush is handy. I have also bought the brass parts kits and never experienced any problems. The fuel supply T unit have two rings on each side (4 on one T) at least up to the 1976 model.

Hm... how handy is that? Steel is harder than messing. Better be on the safe side and use copper wire.

I used a piece of copper wire out of electrical chord and a ton of air last time.  Think I'll stick with that.  Of course, I have a ton of guitar strings lying around, which would have been easier, but they seemed a little harsh to me.

I have a line on some OEM replacement gaskets and o-rings.

Delta: at this link, the kits are listed at the top of the page (01), but there are 2 of them listed as the same replacement number (16010-323-315), but it shows them replacing 2 different originals.  Not sure what the difference would be.  I emailed the site - but they have not gotten back to me.  Any idea?

Thanks

Any idea?

All I know is that many years ago I ordered 4 sets of 16010-323-004 at a Honda dealer.
The lady informed me that the partnumber was superseded by 16010-323-005. Much to my surprise I found out at home that each plastic bag contained only one O-ring for the T-joint where the exploded view in the parts list shows my model needs two. I phoned Honda Nederland to inform them there was something wrong. They had to admit that according to the exploded view there should be two. They sent me by post 4 extra complete sets of 16010-323-005. Very generous.
That's why I've asked the forum to report on the number of O-rings for the T-joint in each set.
Maybe by going to 16010-323-315 Honda has corrected the error.
Here's some irony: although I've used some of the new O-rings, up till now I haven't changed the O-rings at the T-joint at all. After 35 years the originals are still in there and don't leak (touch wood).

It's funny, after soaking and cleaning, and messing with the carbs, I realized that I never changed them either. Not sure if it's "if it's not broke, don't fix it."

I'll report back either way.

Thanks for the help.

The OEMs I got off ebay had plenty of o-rings. 4 per T.

My bad. Forgot the damn link. Check this out to see that there are two different listings for the same thing - but showing replacement for 2 different part numbers.

I don't remember off the top of my head but I still have the packages they came in at home. I'll post it later

I'm pretty sure it's the same one in hte link I posted earlier. I account for everything in the picture and it looks like 2 T-joint rings.

When you look at the picture...

http://www.cmsnl.com/products/packing-set_16010323315/

... I cannot help getting the impression that superseding the 16010-323-305 set by the 16010-323-315 Honda did indeed correct the error in the ... -305 which (at least in my case) had only one O-ring for the T-joint.
Funny, Honda overdid things, because now - looking at the picture - there are no less than 4 O-rings fot the T-joint.

I was hoping for the complete with jets and all. Ive found a kit of four for $56 i may go that route so i know i have no clogged jet issues when i go to turn this thing over

I think the only reason I opted to skip the jets is that A) many people seem to have issue with the newer jets in these "cheap" packs, and that they may not be true to the number/measurement.  I figure I will just clean them.  B) I have a new set of larger jets on the way, so that if after messing with all this, I find that I in fact need to rejet (for my new exhaust), I will be ready.....to pull the carbs yet again! UGH! :)
