bike starts without choke, Good or Bad?
« on: June 16, 2011, 03:12:19 PM »
So I have an 81' cb650custom, and when I got it, it needed carb work, So I cleaned the idle jets, got some new gaskets and such. now the bike seems to work good, needs a tune, but thats about it. Ive been reading these bikes require an extended choking time to warm up, but mine doesnt need the choke at all...when I do pull the choke it starts to die out. What does this starting with no choke mean, am I too rich or lean?

Well, theoretically you are too rich. But in reality, some bikes just don't need much choke in warm weather. Do a series of plug chops (use the search box for instructions if you don't know how) and check the plug color across various rev ranges. If the plugs aren't too dark then you are probably fine.

If the bike seems to run well and you are getting good mileage, then complaining about easy cold starts is looking a gift horse in the mouth. Enjoy your good fortune and move on.

When it's 90 degrees or above my bikes don't need any choke to start, but then they're both earlier models that run more rich to begin with.  How hot is it where you are?  Your carbs have a much leaner idle mixture and an accelerator pump to to make up for it.

What's important is how your spark plugs look.  If they're black and sooty, then it's too rich.

Yes, my spark plugs are black and sooty, so this means I need to turn the air/fuel adjust screws in?
