A question on Armour (Yank translation: Armor)
« on: June 18, 2011, 01:54:07 AM »
What ho, Sohcers.

Im currently living in Australia, originally from the UK and i had an idea on how to reduce the heat in the summer being a keen lover of ALWAYS wearing an armoured jacket.

I was thinking about getting one of those Motocross, exoskeleton, Under Armour things and using a rain coat (i do love those Aussie Drizabones) for when its raining/cold.

Im planning a ride up the east coast, over to the red center and down to the south, back to Sydney. Now ive worked up in FNQ for a while and i really cant imagine riding around in the summer with a heavy jacket on so i was thinking about just wearing a T-shirt with the Armour.

I can imagine some purists would get annoyed as it wont give me as much protection, but everything is a compromise.

I've wondered myself about those. I do see the occasional rider around here wearing some sort of exoskelton type protection now that it is warmer. Better than just a t-shirt which is the choice of many it seems. I'm wearing my full jacket for today's ride plus the visibility vest.

I wear a jacket every where, hot or cold. I don't know about just the armour, i think it runs a chance of getting snagged up on something and doing more damage. Also if you plan riding the route suggested in your first post the you need to be very aware of kangaroos, some 6 foot plus tall and cattle, foxes dingo's, all sorts of stuff, i am dead serious, i have lived up north and it can be a real lottery sometimes, especially at dusk and dawn. I had a friend come stay with me for a while and he wrote his car off in one month, thats 3 roos, in one month, the last one landed on the roof and blew out both screens......I wear a jacket for good reason....

I have a jacket with built in, I guess you could call it armour, it has hardish padding in all the parts that will likely come in contact hard with the road, it also has a removable quilted liner which I take out when the weather is warm, and when the liner is in place it is really warm for days like today, I doubt it was much over 10c when I hopped on the bike this morning and I was still quite comfortable, though my legs got a little cool.
