Rebuild of a 88 Honda Hawk GT650
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:07:48 AM »
I have the urge to post and share the tinkering I am doing with my Honda Hawk.  The Hawk forums I usually post on is down for maintenance, so I figure I would share with someone.  Enjoy!

"Take one last look of the Hawk. She's going under the knife and will never look like this again! I'm excite to see how this will turn out!"

"Lungs are out! On to her nervous system!"

"My hand built wiring harness all spaghetti'd up and looking confusing.... I hope that goes back in and no trouble shooting is needed! (I made the whole thing out of the same size white wire, foolishly!)"

"Power goes out right as im elbow deep in the radiator.... Yeah fumbling in the dark and I pour coolant all over me and the floor. Grrr! Powers back!"

"Front's off! On to the rear!"

"Ohh! Look who joined the party! Had to run to lowes to make a tool (that's right! Little more involved than your average socket set and screwdriver job!) Figured that any weekend garage project worth doing, is worth doing drunk!"

"Judo chop! Severed the tail of the Hawk! Gasp!"

"Remove the head or destroy the brain.... Kinda. Time to slide this motor aside and so some hand sanding on the frame. Soda blast in the morning."

I have a motor I just built sitting on the side lines that is going into this.  The cylinders are over bored from 77mm to 80mm.  So 647cc to 663cc displacement, and high compression Wiseco pistons.  The motor has mild port and polished heads on it along with a new clutch, shift kit, and heavy clutch springs.   Also (the big reason I am taking the whole bike apart and not just dropping the motor) I have a rear swing arm that I painted and cleaned up, and I will be painting the frame.  I am about to head out and soda blast all the grime off of the frame and clean her up for paint.

More pictures will follow tonight most likely!

Nice!  That was my very first motorcycle.  I had it when I was 18-19 and rode it all over Texas.  It was a fantastic bike!  I never did any real work on it, though.  Not only was I a total mechanical novice at the time, but the bike was only 5 years old then and didn't really need any work aside from regular maintenance.

Frame painted.  Little glossy in the light in spots.  Im thinking it will dull out a bit.

Rear wheel soda blasted and ready for paint. I didn't strip it down to bare so I didn't run through the rest of my soda.

Rear swinger all loaded up with the brakes and spindle.  Cush drive and rear sprocket go on tomorrow after more soda blasting and paint.
