Anyone ever cut there fender?
« on: June 17, 2011, 03:29:50 PM »
I was skimming build threads and saw a cut front fender on a 750. Id like to the same to my 550. What is the best route to go about this? Im thinking maybe a band saw then shape it with a grinder? i have access to both. But will it mess up the chrome at all?

I cut my rear and front.  Rear I cut on the seat side so it would retain its beveled edge... its impossible to do this on the front so i just cut it carefully.  I drew it with a sharpie first and then cut it with a air powered cutting wheel, using the thinnest 3M cutting wheel available i think its like 3/32" but dont quote me on it.

After cut mock up...

Painted an mounted...

Rear (for now...I will be filling the holes and repainting when I get my seat/integrated taillight assembly)

with the rear just drill new holes...I used the 2 hole already under the seat and got through bolts that would fit.  Voila super easy.

Angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Traced the shape I wanted and marked with a sharpie. I did not use tape on the side of the cut that stayed, which resulted in me messing up the chrome when I "slipped" with the cutting wheel. I also used the cutting wheel to smooth the edges.

Ya warwick your front fender is exactly what i want to do. I even like the rear too. IMO it looked better chromed but its your bike. How did you prep the chrome to paint it?

My chrome was super pitted.  I liked it better chrome too but there was no saving it.  I hit it with a wire wheel and got everything I could out and it was still less than desirable...  I then took sandpaper and went to town... quick spray of supposed rust neutralizing primer (dont believe the hype)... then paint.

Ya im thinking with these bikes a bench grinder with wire wheel and a buffing wheel is a good investment. ANother question did you paint your headers? my headers were at one time black and the pipes are black so id like to repaint mine and wondering what to use? Grill paint?

Word of advice, go a little longer on the motor side on the front fender unless youre completely cool with washing grit and grime off your motor frequently...  My front fender is more for looks than any function at this point.

Wish I could take credit for this idea...Cut off the rolled front edge that's shaped from the factory and use it to trace your cut.

Domer gets the credit there.

I used a Dremel to cut off the mangled front section of the front fender on my 550.  Went through that steel like a hot knife through butter, and it was a nice, clean cut, too, so no finish work needed.

yup, thats the way to do it... saving the chrome, well if you can cut it perfectly (doubt it). other than that, sandblast and paint. or re-chrome it if you choose...

Did mine with a hack saw. No chrome chipping, but the saw wandered up out of the groove once and marked up the chrome, so be careful. I thought it was a pretty good job.

The edge will rust, but easy to dress up with when doing the weekly polish with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish/Rust Remover.

The fenders aren't chrome.  They're chrome-plated steel.  It's the steel you're cutting and it's the chrome plating you're trying not to mess up while doing it.  A dremel with a cut-off wheel will easily cut the steel without chipping the chrome plating along the edge of the cut, which is why I suggested it.

Domer... is that your bike in this picture?  My bike is earily similar to it and I have been looking for a seat to fit the look... If this is your bike, where did you get that seat??

yup, my bike.... Carpys rocket four seat. does the job, there are a few things i dont like about it but i think that would go with any fiberglass seat (flex, the fun of mounting, etc..) the cover is just a expensive kneeling pad i cut up and wrapped with black vinyl.

I have an extra front fender and have been kicking around the idea to use it for a shorter fender. I too did the rolled edge saving trick on the rear about. About halfway down from this page you can see what I did about 3 years ago. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=42331.50

I like the look of the short front, but like the function of the full size too. Ugh.
