CB650 - Successfully replaced shifter seal and chain
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:44:29 PM »
Isn't it amazing how those 2 hour projects turn into five?  :D  Anyhoo, the shifter seals for the CB650 finally showed up!  So I tore into it today.

First up I drained the oil (not pictured) then I pulled the sprocket cover.  Talk about Filthy!!!

About half a can of cleaner later, I had the cover cleaned up and the shifter area prepped.  I read about someone on here using a screw to pull the shifter oil seal, so I tried it and it worked like a charm!  Thankfully I ordered 2 of the replacement seals, since I managed to puncture the first new one when I was tapping it in with a screw driver.  I learned my lesson, got seal #2 and tapped it in with a nice, flat punch!!!

Since I had the cover off, I decided to do the chain swap I've been planning.  It's the original infinite chain, so basically impossible to get off unless you drop the swing arm.  I wasn't particularly interested in such escapades, so I pulled the rear tire and borrowed Dad's grinder!  A shower of sparks later I had it off!!!

After this I got the new chain cut and test fitted.  Seemed good, so I got everything back together.

After that I fired her up and checked for leaks.  Seemed good!!  Took her for about a 15 mile run and found everthing checked out.  I've got my wheels again!!!!
