Just Bought a 78cb 550FOUR k & had a few questions
« on: June 18, 2011, 07:42:43 PM »
I just purchased a pretty mint cb550 of an old man for 1,000 with a little over 12,000 miles on it. When ever you first start it it knocks until it is warmed up. It also stops knocking when i pull the clutch lever in. I'm not the most familiar with bikes so i couldn't say exactly where the knocking is coming from.  Any helpful ideas would really be appreciated.

The absolute first thing I would do is an oil change. You don't know how long that thing sat.

doubt its knocking per se... sounds more like clutch rattle due to un-synced carbs

Strange that it stop after warming up. Seems like the clutch is rattling (a little? a lot?) while engine is running rougher (cold)?
Some tweaking might eliminate it (afore mentioned carb syncing) 12k mi should be original clutch. Do the clutch cover torqued screws look untouched? If not, inspect the clutch & confirm all pieces are there & assembled per the parts diagram.
Maybe an oldtimer here knows this one ;)
Pretty Mint! Post a pic! :)

Do the 3000 mile routine tune up and then have the carbs vacuum synced.

Is the "knock" still there?

Also make sure ignition timing is spot on... if the original points system is still there make sure the gap is right on the money...

I have a Dyna-S in my 550 that the previous owner installed.  I assumed he did the timing right when he installed it as the bike did run, pretty well actually after the carbs got all situated.  however, he didnt set the timing right, 2/3 were off a few degrees fully advanced.   I tweaked it and the "koncking" at idle subsided a noticeable amount.

also...where is the bike idling currently?
