carb swap?
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:44:58 PM »

I'm restoring a 76 cb750, and the original carbs are a problem.  The #4 carb is very bad inside (water intrusion) and the stem for the main jet is rotted so that the jet won't mount properly again.  The bike also came with what appear to be a set of more modern carbs (1979?) that have an accelerator pump, larger intake diameters, and of course a more modern choke set-up that warrants a cable.  The more modern carbs appear to be in decent shape - but I haven't opened them up, either.

So what is my best path here?  Should I hunt up a set of replacement carbs for the bike or can I make the extra set work with this bike?  At the very least I'd have to find some larger diameter carb-to-box connectors and a choke cable.  Will this set even work with my bike?  Pics are attached.

If you are more interested in riding and having the bike run as well as it did stock, then scare up the proper stock parts for it.  "Restoring", to me, implies that is the preferred route.

If you want an ongoing tinker project, then see if the carbs can be mechanically fitted to the bike, get it running and do repeated testing to tailor the jetting to fit your engine, induction, and exhaust.  You'll probably need to adapt a choke cable and custom throttle cable, too.

I suspect the carbs aren't on the bike now because of the learning curve and tinkering needed to get them to work well on this bike.
I'm sure it can be done, depends on the effort and learning you want to do.  No one will know your bike better than you when you are all done.
