New leak.. easy?
« on: August 09, 2010, 02:59:52 PM »
So.. I popped a leak two days ago.

It is not really significant right now, since it only leaks while running... but I intend to fix it...
It appears to be coming from the left side of my breather cover on the very top of my top end.

So.. my question is this:

Can I safely assume it is the breather cover gasket?
that is: GASKET, BTHR CVR 12329-323-000
Or #3
and that replacement of such will fix it?

I have NO comorbidities whatsoever, and no other leaks.
I ask because I love to have replacement gaskets on hand before I open things up... soas to only do it once :)

Also.. is this a common leak point? I searched briefly, but most threads are about o-rings...

thank you all..

It might pay to check the breather hose is clear all the way through to the air box. If it's restricted in any way it could be increasing crankcase pressure to leak at the cover.  ???

It was totally full of fromunda.
And my leak has almost totally resolved.

You, my friend, are a genius.
It totally makes sense, too.

$60 would be going VERY wrong for this problem, I think.

That's good news Cameron & thanks for expanding my vocabulary. I had to Google 'fromunda' to find out what that was - although now that I know I think I'd rather not know!  :D :D

I thought I was having the same problem, but the breather hose was pretty clean. Any other ideas? (I'm NOT sure I don't have any other leaks. I'm still trying to get all the grime off the engine to see what is going on. Is that breather hose supposed to be attached to something on the other end? Mine was just hanging near the battery.

If you are still running the standard air box, the hose should connect to the base of the air box for crankcase gas recirculation.

Oh.. since this got necro'd.

That leak popped up again later on.
I replaced the breather gasket, as described in post 1... and it cured it.

That gasket does blow after all.

I went to reattach the breather tube and found that the "Air cleaner joint" 17359-374-000 is missing. I have searched and can't find one anywhere.

Has anyone ever had this problem and come up with a workaround?

Frostyboy +1 but did I miss it what bike and year??? Does the hose go into the breather or down by the chain? They are different for different years.

1976 CB550F.

Right now the hose is not connected to the airbox at all. There is a piece that connects the two ("Air cleaner joint" 17359-374-000) that is missing. It seems like if I replaced the breather tube with a longer hose it could be connected directly to the airbox. (I have know idea what kind of hose to buy, though.)

Since i dont have an air box, I bought a generic little breather filter from my local Autozone. I fitted the tube with a little modification to the breather filter and made a mount for it. So the breather hose goes from the top of the engine to the filter. Simple and works fine. Cheap too.

Beautiful build Johnny5! I may convert to pods if I can't find the airbox parts.
