Whats that Knock!
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:11:06 AM »
Howdy,

I've got a kawasaki GT550 thats done god knows how many miles.
It runs good, blows no smoke. but does have a small oil leak. can hear a bit of valve chatter.

When it is at idle, or say around 1000-1500rpm, there is a knocking sound coming from the bottom end, but as soon as the revs pick up to above 2000rpm the sound goes away.

What do you reckon it could be?

Does the sound change when you pull in the clutch?
Have the carburetors been synchronized/ worked on lately?

sound doesn't change at all when the clutch is pulled in.

Sound's definitely coming from the front of the engine, not the gearbox.

I just bought it, its been used as a daily driver by the PO for the last year, i doubt its had the carbs balanced or worked on in the time he had owned it.

Time for a full tuneup, then come with Q's.

That must be one of those models not imported into the U.S..  There was a Kaw GPZ550, and Suz made a GT500(2 stroke).  But, no matter.

If a tune up doesn't do the trick, you'll probably need to do a rebuild. Crank and rod bearings.  There is no easy fix if that is what's wrong.
