Correct Front Sprocket Size?
« on: April 22, 2006, 08:37:29 PM »
I've got my cb 550 running pretty good, but it seems to be geared very low.  At 65mph i'm turnning 5,000rpms.  I haven't yet checked the number of teeth on the front sprocket, but I am posting to find out what the correct size should be.  Thanks,

Stock Cb550 had 17T front amd 37T rear sprockets.

Rear wheel size and tire profiles can also effect final drive ratio.

My cb 550 K3 runs at the same rpm/speed as yours although I changed my gearing many years ago with 500four sprockets ie 17front-34rear instead of 37rear, I cant remember exactly what difference it made it just seemed to cruise at a  more relaxed 80mph=6000 rpm and my fuel consumption which was allways good got even better.

what kind of milage do you get?
My 550F is running rich and the last time I checked milage I estimated it to be no better than 20!

Yipes! That is pretty poor mileage, particularly given the displacement. My car with three times the displacement and how much more weight? does better than that. Sounds like one of more things could use some tuning. What do your plugs look like and I guess riding style/habits might come into play as well.

In reply to Green550f re his 20  mpg. I feel almost embarassed to say what my 550k3 does, as it seems the only contributions on this subject is from owners whose bikes do crap mpg and they need to know what is wrong. For the record my bike was and still is std.with exception of 4/1pipe and the sprocket change I used to get 70- 77mpg bear in mind this was between 1986&1992 when Iwas 3stone lighter and used my bike regularly during summer months for the 46 mile round trip to work & back, leaving home at 5.30am returning 2.30-3 pm needless to say the roads were quieter ,often id take a longer route home including high speed jaunts down the M1.As petrol was sold in gallons it was easy to work out consumption ,running the tank from full to reserve and fill up to full again divide galls into miles run.Unfortunatly my present job means I use a company vehicle and to be honest I  do under 500 miles a year now so dont bother checking.

With the stock 17T and 37T on my 1978 CB550K. I'm running about 5200RPM at 70mph. I did alot of carb cleaning (Yamaha Carb Cleaner) this past winter and added a Dyna-S ignition. I also changed to CB900 coils with new wires/caps/plugs. Running better now than when I first acquired it. Been averaging about 50 miles per gallon. I get about 125 miles before switching over to reserve. If I did the math right...should get about 185 miles to a tank.

Can we say SOOT! :o
I've backed out the idle mix screws 1/2 turn and the plugs are looking mush better on idle. ;D
Haven't taken it out for a good run yet since I'm waiting on a new air filter to come in.
