What brand/type inner tube do you recommend? CB550..
« on: April 27, 2006, 10:08:57 AM »
Hi All,

I was at the local cycle shop the other day, and bought new inner tubes to put in when I change my tires (will be done shortly I hope!)

The guy behind the counter gave me two boxes- one for the front tire, and one for the back tire.  Fine- only problem is, the box for the rear tire tube is TWICE the size of the front tire tube.  When I enquired, he said that this was all they had, and that both tubes were the right size, but the rear tube was a "Heavy Duty" tube.

This got me thinking- don't I want both inner tubes to be heavy duty?  Or is this overkill?  Are tubes for street bikes different than tubes for motorcross bikes and such?  Would too heavy a tube create too much heat within the tire and do something kooky?

As usual, I'm probably over analyzing this stuff, but since we all invest a lot on good, inflated tires, I want to make sure I put in the best!  For a cb550 with stock spoked rims, what do you guys recommend for inner tubes?  I've already got the tires picked out, and brand new rim spoke tape/strips.  I just need to know about those tubes, man, the tubes!

On my bikes I just used plain old ChengShin tubes from JC Whitney. Been riding with them over 3 years on some long trips and never had any problems.

check the manuf's web site to see what type of use the tube is meant for. usually HD tubes are for dirt, and not recomended for high speeds.

Your tube just holds air. It doesnot need to be strong just supple. the tire does all the hard work. The hd tube is just that. so unless you are jumping your bike, you would not need it.

A tube is a tube in my opinion. The big $$ should go into the tire, as it takes the
grunt of the abuse on the street.

I like Continental tubes because they come with a nifty metal valve stem cap that has a valve core tool covered by a rubber boot.  I'd have accumulated a box of those things by now, but people take a fancy to them so I give them away.

I pay the extra for Michelin or Pirelli tubes. Probably crazy, but I don't like to go cheap on the rubber.
