Shed find 400f
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:57:54 AM »
I was picking up some parts for my 650 project today from the local bike shop, and the fella there asked me if I was interested in another honda 4 for another project.  He sparked my interest, so I took a walk out into the shed out back and there was an old 400f sitting there looking all sad.  It is basically a complete bike, he rescued it from a shed out in the middle of nowhere, I have absolutely no idea if it goes, it doesn't look like it has gone in years.  He is asking $500 for it, what I'm asking here is, is it worth that much?

I would say its worth it for sure, only because the cost of mine was a silly high price, and no where near as complete.

I havn't seen a honda four sell for that price anywhere, so yeah i'd say its not a bad deal

No, especially without a title. From what I can tell in the photos hardly anything on that bike is salvageable-offer him 125.  I have bought 400 fours in much better condition for much less and some with a title. my .02....Larry

Hi Larry, title is no problem here {i have 3 without titles} and old Honda's are worth a fortune, our market is far smaller than yours mate  ;). Its worth the money but you'll still have to spend some on it,  you are in the right place for that.... ;D ;)
I am buying heaps of stuff from the states at the moment, its very cheap with the favourable exchange rate at the moment....There's some good cheap piston kits around as well....

Ok so it sounds like it may be worth it, even though I only paid $650 for my 650, and it was in far better condition than this one, but in saying that, I know I got it cheap.  What do you fellas reckon, cafe bike?

Retro,   that is hard to imagine the value difference-guess the law of demand and supply is truly in effect.  :( for the Aussies. I live near Philly, PA and over the past couple years have purchased three 400 fours for the total price of 550-one even had a title and none were rust buckets like the one in the photo ;D The bike in my avatar, after many hours of work , was one of the three 8)...Larry

Looks like it was already a cafe so probably best and cheaper to stay with that theme. For your area finding good stock parts etc. for a true resto sounds like a real money pit.

money pit they sure are, for a good tidy up of my 650 has already cost me over 2k plus the purchase price of the bike, and I got all the painting done for free, I only had to supply some of the paint.

You must take into account things like our wages are generally higher here and when exchange rates get back to normal {or before the GFC} that $500 AUD would be around $390 USD or less, add higher wages to that and its starting to sound cheap. SOHC Honda's are getting hard to find here.

Its absolutely worth $500!!  You could part it out for that much or more.  Title isn't a big a deal as it used to be.  There are places online where you can get a title, it will cost you a couple hundred, but if thats what you want, it can be done.

I picked up a 76' 400F as a parts bike for $100 on ebay, they guy was local, so it worked out well.  Same deal, no title and the bike was almost complete, only missing the tank.  The motor is free, but the cam chain is broken so it only partially turns.  Then again, it's my parts bike.
