Based on my recent experience in bringing a '77 model back to life:

Q: how can you disable this robust machine for a week or more, using a screwdriver in less than 10 seconds?

should it be something that is hard to tell upon inspection?
,or i would say something like unscrew the ground
or fiddle with the carbs in some way

I think this might be the first person I've seen trying to STOP a CB750 from running...

Oh yeah, I can think of half a dozen ways just off the top of my head, probably dozens if I were to stand next to the bike and think about it. I can do some damage, even without tools!

Well, I would need a screw driver and a pliers, but I would disconnect the condensers from the points.

Pop off the sidecover and remove the fuses.

Take the battery with you? It makes the bike a 500+ lb. paperweight.

How can you decide how long it's going to take to repair the damage you caused? I suppose if you opened up the ignition cover and damaged the advance mechanism beyond repair it could take a week or more to get a replacement, but if the owner has a spare it's a quick fix.

Even if you damage the engine enough that it requires removal and disassembly to repair, it wouldn't take that long if the parts are at hand or available for purchase.

How's this:

Put it in gear, wedge the screwdriver between the terminals on the starter solenoid, and send it off riderless over the edge of a cliff or at least into fast-moving traffic. The resulting damage would probably take a week or more to repair.

Funny ... something like this was just jokingly brought up in a recent conversation....
A buddy of mine's "best friend" was preparing to sell him his old bike.
My buddy took his classes, got his cy license... and on the day he was going to pick it up, his "best friend" changed his mind about selling it.
I told my buddy I could show him which screws to turn if he was interested in making it less desirable to his friend.

1. Use the screwdriver the bridge the hot side of the main fuse contact to frame ground. In about ten seconds the wire harness should smoke/melt, maybe even burst into flames.
Should take about a week or more to effect repairs.

2. You could also insert a screwdriver between the chain links at the top side and leave it there. It's disabled indefinitely. If ignored and riding attempted, it'll take a week or more restore.

3. Borrow a small child and place it next to the machine and the screwdriver. Walk away.

4. disconnect the battery. If you want stealth too, put the cable back on with a nylon screw and a card board insulator sandwiched.

We have ways.

Assuming your goal is theft prevention and you want to bring it back to life after the week is up:

1. remove battery
2. disconnect points &/or coils
3. pocket the fuses
4. empty gas tank & float bowls
5. deflate tires
6. Chain it to a pole
7. remove the drive chain
8. Take the plug caps with you

I've seen this: turn the air screws in until they stop. It's almost impossible to start the bike, if it is in good condition (if the vacuum hoses leak, though, it will still run...).

Wow - I was asking as a bit of a joke but what great replies - this is what happens when you go to sleep in Australia and wake up the next morning to check your posts...

Ok, so my answer is - grab a screwdriver and remove one of the drain plugs from one of the carbies. If you want to totally disable the bike remove all four. The drain screws are special items, and you can't just plug the holes with M6 bolts because the valve seat is a special taper at the end of the screw. Without these screws the carbies spew fuel, and if you plug the holes any other way fuel floods up inside the carbies and runs into the airbox. Either way you're not getting far without setting yourself alight.

My fun question was in response to me being off the road for a week due to the loss of one of these screws. Of course you can always buy a whole float bowl from Honda, or order the screws from a site in the US - either way you're off the road for a week.

I reckon my answer is a bit getter than some of the ones like smoking the wire harness - now that's a bit drastic!
