'76 550k: rear wheel bearing install
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:50:55 AM »
Hey folks. Had a hell of a time getting the rear retainer out a while back on an extra rear wheel I'm rebuilding, so I took it to a mechanic to remove it. Unfortunately, I didn't see the whole removal process when he went ahead and took out the bearings. So I'm missing some photos for my reinstall process.

I've gotten to the brake side bearing, and have a question about how the bearing, with the distance collar goes in. I can line up the collar "ears" inside the hub with the spacer from the bearing on the other side, but not sure how the brake side "ears" on the collar are supposed to fit into the tight brake side opening.

I have photos below of the parts I'm talking about. Hope I've explained it well enough.

Any help is much appreciated.

Those ears ain't supposed to fit on the bearing they just locate the spacer inside the hub so you can get the spindle through
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks Bryan,

So do I need to push down the ears to get it inside the hub cavity, and then spread them back out when it's inside there???

That seems like some houdini #$%* :)

Am I correct in assuming the smaller side ears clamp over the spacer that fits into the larger bearing on the other side of the wheel?

Appreciate the help.

Think I figured it out. Just slips down in there if you don't have the ears spread out the way they were. So I think I'm all lined up.
