Starter Button Wiring -HELP-
« on: June 21, 2011, 12:18:50 PM »
I was switching out the bars on my 72 cb500 and while pulling the wires through the old bars I accidently pulled the starter (yellowish) wire from it's connection (I'm not the most delicate person in the world).  I see the button and the spring for the starter and it seems like there is a flat piece of metal held tight by a screw.  The yellow wire has just a 1/4 inch of bare wire sticking out (not sure if there is supposed to be some sort of connector there.  My guess is the yellow wire goes onto the flat metal some how.
Any advice?  Any pictures?

Can you solder?

THE BEST pictures can be found here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=80532.0

Otherwise I have a meager picture from my own disassembly:

Edited because I first posted a picture of the horn button.

space is tight in there. take care you don't leave too much solder on the connection or it could ground on the switch body.

I need to do this as well, same thing happened to me switching to clubmans...  I think the solder there must be weak... i didnt rub and tizzug anything super hard when doing my swap.

Right after I posted I realized it needed to be soldered- to answer the question apparently I can't solder.

I tried a few times and nearly had it back together when my crappy solder job came loose.  I ended up putting everything back together just to see what would happen.

Now when I turn the key it automatically tries to turn over (regardless if it's in the kill position).  When I do get it started there is a funny squeak/chirp sound coming from the starter or alternator area.  Also it sounds like the starter is humming.

I tried disconnecting the starter wire from the headlight bucket and then starting with the kick- but nada...
Obviously the starter wire is a problem, but I'm also wondering if maybe I wired things up wrong when Put it all back together.  Shouldn't the kill switch kill even if the starter button is messed up?

I'm going to call around tomorrow and look into getting a new control.  I may try to re-solder depending on my frustration level.
Thanks for the pics and such everyone... definitely helpful.  BTW the new bars are sweet.

Its really important to tin the wire in soldering!  If you dont you will likely get a terrible bond.

To tin the wire...get the tip of the iron/gun up to temp... then touch the solder to it... a small droplet of solder will rest on the tip... at this point touch it to the end of the wire you wish to bond....Once you've done that your halfway there.  Now take the piece you wish to solder that wire to and heat it with the tip while holding the (now tinned) wire to it... when the solder reaches its melting point the two will bond. immediately remove the iron/gun from the piece and let it cool.. make sure if there is anything plastic touching the piece you are soldering doesn't melt in the process (remove it if at all possible)

dude, slodering is super #$%*in easy..dont use that flux solder all in one crap..get some silver solder and some "regular paste flux"...and make sure youre tip is clean, wipe that flux on the wire ans where you want to solder it to,then "tin"the wire and area.then hold the wire down with somthing where you want to solder it to and touch it with the iron..you probly wont even have to feed any solder if you do it like this..sorry for my crappy explanation..maybe this is bad advise, but this is how i solder.and ive done curcit boards..never had any problems...

The yellow/red wire should be attached to a small shield-shaped phenolic contact board that slips into the groove just behind the starter button. The flat metal piece that's screwed into the body of the switch is a ground plate: if you soldered the yellow wire to it it's no wonder the bike tries to start by itself. Take that little plate off and you'll find the contact board beneath it; that's where the wire should go (and there is usually a pretty large glob of solder on the back of it. Just get the solder already there to flow, then stick your wire into it).

Assembly is button/spring in place first, then slide the contact board into its groove with the contact side facing the button, followed by the little metal ground plate. The plate has a bent tab with the hole in it that is inserted with the tab facing the button; it sits between the button and contact board and the spring butts up against it on the button side. When you push the button, the spring/plate/button stud combination grounds the starter circuit coming off the yellow/red wire.

The kill switch doesn''t keep the starter from working, it just cuts power to the coils so that the engine won't run.

Good luck

Awesome breakdown SohRon thanks-
The "tin"ing sounds good, but that's all in the typing... I'll cross my fingers if/when I get down to it.

Fixed it-
The soldering is pretty ugly, but it's running great and the new drag bars are sweet.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
