New controls installed... what a mess!
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:58:06 AM »
So I decided I was going to put newer controls on the Honda.  Picked up clipons, controls, grips, master cylinder, clutch on e-bay for $35.  Seemed fairly straight forward till I saw the mess under my tank.  Plus going from different colored wires to other color wires was not fun.  A few pints of Bodingtons and everything was clear to me.

This is what I found when I took off the tank, not pretty.

Here's the left side, still working the clearance issues on the clutch cable, may go with different bars.

Here's the right side, I'm working on an actual mount for the urinalysis cup, but the band clamp worked os I could spin it around the block a few times.

Was getting dark when I rolled back in.  Loving my $800 bike (ok, I did spend $280 extra for the pipes on e-bay).

Sure, should be easy enough.  With California weather it's so damn hard not to be out riding in the sunshine on canyon roads but I'll try and pull myself off my bike(s) and write down what I did.  Was fairly straight forward once I figured out what did what on the controls.  Just need lots of bullet connectors, beer and patients.

Those are 2006 GSXR 600 controls, etc... mounted to the bars.  The pipes are kerkers, and ya, hell of a deal.  The had REALLY small dents on the bottom of the primaries so they were sold as scratch and dent.  You'd have to be really search to even see them.  Oh well, I'll take the discount because they are beautiful on the bike.  The controls turned out really good and look really nice, too bad the flash makes them look bad.  For that matter, the bike actually looks pretty bad too.  The turn signals are on the way out, they're pitted and rusty to the core.

As far as controls go, most Jap bikes are essentially the same, it's mostly a matter of figuring out what wire does what.  I looked at the insides and saw what wires were coming out of what so I put them in groups.  3 wires for the headlights, 2 for brakes, etc...  Once you are set up like that and know what ones you need to plug into it's just a matter of trial and error.  The bullet connectors help here because they're easy to swap out.

Yeah,I wouldn't have any trouble hooking the wire up but just wondered what bike they were from. So where are you at? I'm in Modesto. There are a few more of us over in the bay area and some down by LA. Seems most of the people on this forum are back east.

I'm down at in the Lompoc/Santa Maria area.  The riding down here is fantastic.  Not much traffic, nice weather and lots of canyon roads.  That's what got me back into bikes.  It's funner this time though, I wasn't much into modifications the last time I rode.  After 14 years of bracket racing cars I've got a constant itch to mess with stuff now.

I haven't been through Santa Maria since the early 80's driving big rigs. Is it still 101 or highway1? From what I recall, its not far from Pismo. Should be nice for riding.Take care bro and enjoy the bike.

Yeah, I did the same ting with my bike. Modern controls are so much nicer. And you're right, it's one heck of a tangled mess under that tank.    ;D ;D ;D
