78 cb550k help coils!! FIXED THE NEW POST!!!
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:42:33 PM »
so in the past couple weeks i have done a few new things

i installed a new tach new speedo 4 leds ...turn signals. oil pressure and neutral.

new ignition switch small one under my tank..
it was one of these http://store03.prostores.com/servlet/peakmoto/the-6726/4g/Detail

but has a red wire and black wire brown with white stripe and brown wires

the stock ignition has a extra brown.. guy at the store said too just connect the two browns from the stock switch to the single brown??? i did this if it is correct then good cuz thats what i have done.

long story short my 1st and 4th cylinder wont fire i checked to see if there was spark....NOTHING...checked all my wires they are all connected.
so is my wireing the switch wrong or is my 1-4 coil just DEAD??

First thing......shine the 1 and 4 points until they are really clean and shiny, go ahead and do 2 and 3 too.
Try again.
The 'extra' brown is for your parking light ( tail light on ) and would be the 3rd. click on the original ign. switch. You can just leave it disconnected. I am amused as to why you paid thirty six bucks for a switch meant for a completly different bike when a direct replacement is easily available where wire colors and functions match ??

the wire colors do match  the stock switch has 5 wires red, black, brown white stripe and brown, brown

the new switch is red, black, brown white stripe, brown...missing the second brown

as for points i dont have them running dyna-s

stock coils.. is there away to check if they are working other than with my spark plug to a ground

OK. it's not the exact switch in the pic. then. You could check the 1+4 coil by swapping the 2+3 wires onto it and test for spark which would prove the coil to be good/bad..... otherwise some Dyna owners here should chip in with things to try, good luck.

First check if you are getting 12v to the coil there is one wire black I think that feeds both coils it goes up to the coils then branches off to feed both we know you have power to that point because the 2 & 3 coil works. check where it branches off to feed the 1 & 4 coil it may be have come unplugged or it is dirty

.... guess  the coils are toast

Possible but unlikely.  You probably overlooked something at tracking the power to the coils and from the coils to the points.

How can you know your 'coils are toast' without testing them ?? You already said 2+3 worked OK.
Did you swap the 2+3 pick-up ( no points, it's Dyna ) over to the 1+4 coil and test for spark ?? and did you check for voltage at the black/white connector on coil 1+4 ??
Your going to have to do some actual testing on your bike to solve the problem and learn in the process.....  ;) :)

But...
There is Y connection at the coils... which can allow one to get power, but not the other if something is awry.
But then, if the other side of the coils, blue or yellow doesn't get properly connected to the points, or if the points get a film coating, then no spark.

Electrics are very much about details.  Ignore them at your own dismay.

Roach That y connection is what I was telling you about earlier. Did you check that connection. You need to verify that 1 & 4 coil is getting power just because one is getting power does not mean the other is you HAVE to check both not just one. If you don't under stand report back.

When testing for power on the blue wire the points must be open

So coil is good gets spark with wires from 2-3. wires from 1-4 won't fire on coil 2-3.
