shhhh..i'm hunting wabbits!
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:58:10 AM »
d@mn wabbits are getting under my fenceline and pulling up seedling plants, veg.  i just planted 120 groundcover starts to hide an unuseable area, and they just pull them up.  they dont eat them at all.
any homeowners out there have a tested remedy for keeping these ufkers out of the veg?
...besides a .22  ::)

i live in the PNW, and well, lately its proving that it IS all rain and no sun, so whatever i use needs to be somewhat waterproof, and i have kids and a dog, so pet/kid friendly too.

thanks

If you figure something out that doesn't involve a .22 come down my way next- the Missus does not like her emerging flowers being chewed off right after they bloom. I need dead wabbits quick.

I have a lot of fun with these:

Got tired of cleaning up sh!t from the neighborhood cats.

I set up 3 in the backyard with a nice overlapping field of fire. Lotsa fun to watch the f'ers get blasted. The kids like them, too. They run thru them when it's hot.

Every damn plant in my yard is surrounded by 24" tall chicken wire because of these damn animals, and they still come around and crap in my yard.  Crossman air rifle... not as loud as a .22, but still gets the job done.  I've taken out three so far this year.

I am tempted to go buy some rat snakes or black snakes from a pet store, do they sell those there?
Which one would be best at gobbling up wabbits?

worked in the yard yesterday and found an outcropping of mole hills.
ran down to the big store and picked up a few dynamite-stick looking sulfer smoke bombs.
carpet bombed his territory.  i dare him to come back...4th of July is 'round the corner!  8)
I also opted for a granular shake stuff that supposedly emits a smell that rabbits and squirrels cant stand.  shook it around my fenceline, and watered in.

Rabbits? Gophers? A local woman has been castigated in the press about her view of a black bear that visited her chicken coop where she is raising "free range chickens."  ::) Black bears are not common this far south. Most folks have been telling her to live with it. She's the one encroaching on the bear's territory. Got any non-lethal repellent ideas for black bear?

Pretty much. Lock away anything that might be considered food. It's really a female and, initially reported as a cub. However, from the pictures it appears the cub is a yearling. The woman complained on one hand that it destroyed her chicken coop, but proceeded to tell all how she was able to get within a few feet to take a picture.  :o I think Darwin is going to have a field day shortly.  ;D

Can you please ship him stateside with a few holes punched in a box?
I'll send him back once all the wabbits are deceased.

Marigolds - The marigold is probably the most well known plant for repelling insects. French marigolds repel whiteflies and kill bad nematodes. Mexican marigolds are said to offend a host of destructive insects and wild rabbits as well. If you choose marigolds for your garden they must be scented to work as a repellant. And while this plant drives away many bad bugs, it also attracts spider mites and snails.

A side note:
This is the first year I've had serious neighbor cat(s) problems in my back yard.  It is also the first year I haven't planted marigolds in the garden.
No, they don't smell pleasant.  But, it is better than cat feces.  And they look a LOT better.

Cheers,

PS:There are a lot of companion plants out there.
You can intersperse them with other desirable plants for symbiotic relationships.
Example: First year of tomato growing had the crop devasted by Hornworm.
Since companion planting basil next to them, I haven't seen a tomato Hornworm in 15 years.

Yeah we plant marigolds, nasturtiums onions and garlic it seems to work as well as my neighbor's electric fence, all so, they (nothing) don't like the smell of a larger predator Coyote, Cougar and I have been known to walk the perimeter with a pot of my pee marking territory.

Funny you should say that Bill. When living up north we had trouble with Kangaroo's eating everything, my neighbour told me to pee around my plants and gardens, and sure enough it worked a treat.... ;D
