Death of a CB750 K4?
« on: April 25, 2006, 11:51:09 PM »
First off, I know the tech forum isn't really the place for this; but I always come here and post here~ ~ ~ ~~I feel like I know the people here.

Just got home from the hospital.  Going down MY street, 1/4 mile from home at 40 MPH.  Woman in a car pulls out from side street right in front of me.  Shut down the gas, hit the brakes, down shift; ain't gonna work; plow into the driver's side front end......... up over the bike onto her car hood at an angle and in through the front window glass.  Black out and come to with a woman staring right into my face; her mouth open screaming and eyes bigger than saucers; strange thing is I can't hear any sound coming out of her throat.  Stranger yet, the face shield on my helmet isn't broken.  Paramedics, cops show up real quick.

She's got no insurance; and oh, by the way officer, she has no driver's license.

The medics won't let me move at all.  Keep still 'til we find out if your head and neck are still connected.

By the time the docs start moving me around onto a stretcher, the bike is gone, already towed away.  Didn't even get a glimpse of it to find out if it's savable.  Cops and docs say forget it, it's wasted.  A witness in a car which was right behind me who saw everything, called my wife.  She ran from the house (literally; by foot) to the scene.  She said it really didn't look too bad.

I don't know.  Can I find out tomorrow at the impound yard?

Banged up and bloody, but no broken bones.  The Original Super Power was with me on this one.

I hate to sound like some kind of movie character, but the truth is guys, my very first thought when I knew impact was unavoidable............ NO, LADY, DON'T WASTE MY 750!!!

I'll let you guys know the results when I see my sweetheart in the impound yard.  I will miss all of you if I no longer have a 750 K4............ only 24,000 miles, all original (and, yes, in reference to a recent post, even the chain and sprockets).

Great that you are OK. I hope the bike is fixable. Those older bikes were built strong, not like the putty they use  now.

Damn.  Major suckage.  Hope you get back to 100% quickly.  The bike can be fixed.

Regarding the incident, did she pull into your lane?  You mentioned going through the windshield, so I assume you went over the hood?  Did she come from the right or left?  How far away was she when she pulled out in front of you?  Did she just "not see" you?  How slow did you manage to get it before impact?  No insurance or license, was she illegal or just dumb?

I don't want to sound like a weirdo, but I know that I learn a lot from each incident that occurs and I try to apply any potential lessons to my life and maybe be a bit safer.

Glad you are still vertical. Here are a few steps to a complete recovery:
1., Let your bumps and bruises heal, but let the wife minister to you a bit to make her feel better too ;D
2., get your 750 back where it belongs, in your garage.
3., Take an inventory of needed parts and work.
4., If need be, post needs here for us to see and we'll see what we can come up with.
5., Put said 750 back to rights.
6., GET BACK ON THE BIKE!!!!!!!!! I can't emphasize this enough, because if you don't get back on, you probably never will, and all of us would lack a good soul count among our friends, and that! would be a crying shame.
7., Post some pics of the newly rolling bike, just to show off, of course ;D

dude, get yourself better first. get some rest!!!!

glad to know that you're ok. I live barely off campus from the U of MN and it seems like almost every other day someone pulls out in front of me. the #$%*ty thing about it is, no matter how loud our pipes are, we still have crappy horns, and if you are wearing a full face helmet, shouting obscenities doesn't really work too well. I've kicked a couple of peoples cars before for being #$%*s, but I was on my freestyle(pedal) bike, and its a little easier to get away on one of those.

and I've got some extra parts that I'd love to get rid of, especially if it goes towards a good cause. let us know what you need!!!!

...man, glad to hear your ok........your gonna be sore for weeks though. Take it real easy during the sore period. As far as the bike/impound/insurance goes, remember one thing, it's still your bike. You own it, damaged or not. If you happened to have collision insurance, and they pay you out on it, make it very clear during all the negotiations that you want the salvage. I would be contacting the person that hit you, don't threaten, just say..."hey sccidents happen, but what are you gonna do about my bike?". Never know, maybe they will pay you. If they don't, it's gonna have to be time lawyer up, but we all know who gets rich then. Bad scene for everyone involved. I know I have a '73 dated DID front wheel somewhere in the shed. Let me know if you want it......

I don't want to be an alarmist about the impound business and I hope where you live they are more reasonable than my fair? city. A poor guy had his motorcycle stolen from in front of his condo. Low and behold, a couple of days later he spots it in a driveway a few blocks away. He called the police. They show up and get his permission to tow it so they get finger prints or something. Being a good citizen he agrees and they tow it. The city uses a tow service's yard for impounds. Through confusion and mis-communication, when the guy went to inquire with the city as to where is bike was at, they told him, but informed him he needed to pay over $200 in fees to get it back. I was in the local paper for days while the guy haggled with them. I guess I would try to have someone retrieve it ASAP. Oh, when he did get it back, some parts were missing, he suspected some impound lot employees were helping themselves to misc. parts.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

     ~ ~ ~ I MUST SHOUT THIS OUT~ ~ ~

MY HEART FELT THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE MORAL SUPPORT AND THE OFFERS OF HELP!!

GroovieGhoulie - - A very good idea, we can all learn from it!! I will make a separate post with details.

Dusthawk - - A great list, I will also comment on that in a separate post (my head seems to need
a little more than normal time to think some thinks out (please, no comments on this one ;D)

Bowhunter - - Thank you very much for your super kind offer (read below, it's kinda wait 'n see)

Everyone and your kind offers - - Couldn't possibly ask for a better brotherhood.

     GENTLEMEN, THE MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!!

I was finally able to make it to the impound yard today.  Couldn't yesterday, legs too sore.  I have to walk and ride buses.

HANG ON TO YOUR SKIRTS..............IT'S GOING TO BE HARD TO KEEP YOUR GARTERS ON............

     Front fender, wasted.........
Headlight eyebrow, which I custom made, wasted........
     Headlight, not even broken...........
Left side fork, broken rubber RETAINER STRAP........... not sure yet if fork is good or bad......
Left side gas tank badge....... gone (popped off, no gas tank scratches or dents).........
Front tire, not flat, still holding air.........
Front rim, looks fine, but then, why not? Tire holding air.......

I am making arrangements to get the bike out tomorrow (Friday).  The impound yard is charging only $10.00 a day, the towing fee from accident scene to impound yard was only $15.00 ( yes, I know, but then, this whole thing has been a miracle!).

Bob Wessner - - Yes, you are right, (about the impounding, etc.,) true words of wisdom.  I really wanted to do all this yesterday but I just could not walk.

I wish that I were capable of coming across with the right words to thank all of you for the feeling of warmth you have given me.

I will make further posts; right now, it looks like the worst I might be looking at is the left front fork, and even that is a maybe.  I will be hoping that my "winning" streak continues and The Big Super Power lets me slide on that front fork too.............. I kinda hate to keep asking, but, Dear Lord, I do seem to be on a roll here................

Love Ya Brothers, the 750 K4 Lives!!

If you look closely at my avatar, you will notice mounted on the crash
bars a pair of Sears boat horns.  A small air compressor mounted to the
bottom of the battery box drives them.  I cannot tell you how many
times in the last 35 years of riding the bike they have (potentially) saved
me. At the very least people hit the brakes and look for the semi.

I'm not sure if Sears (or others) still sell them and they are somewhat
ugly but boy are they effective.  ;D

Gotta watch those car drivers, they just don't look and many don't care.   I hope the person that hit you gets the
book thrown at her for driving with no license or insurance.  That is the least amount of justice you deserve.

...Fantastic news! Sounds like your making the best out of a bad situation. The bike doesn't sound that bad at all!! Get her the heck out of that lot and into your shop, a nice pat on the tank will make you both feel better....... :)
