1974 cb550 timing concern
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:04:59 PM »
Hope someone can give me some advice on this situation.  First my 1974 cb550 never felt right at the set up it was when I bought it.  I consider myself a pretty good mechanic and like to do all my work myself.  I decided to dive into the carbs and make sure they were matched and synched correctly.  I rebuilt them with a air pod and 4-1 set up in mind.  I then reinstalled them and synched them up.  I noticed it was a Lil tough to synch.  I then looked into the spark and noted that plug one was dark and wet and plug 4 was a nice lite brown.  I then investigated the timing and found the points to be off.  1-4 were set at .018 and 2-3 were closed.  I adjusted both pints to .016 and put new plugs in.  I started it up and the motor came to life and sounded great.  I noticed there was smoke coming out of the tail pipe.  I figured it was due to number 1 not firing.  I rode it for a bit and it ran great!  Me and the wife decided to go on a ride and with in 5min it drops number one and is now sluggish and struggling to go. I make it back to the house and pulled the plugs and 1 is wet and number four is a lite brown.
Anyone have any suggestions on what could be the issue that I'm dealing with and how to fix it.

Bobby

Did you set the carb float levels and did you check the fuel flow rate into the carbs would be my questions to you ......
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks for the reply.  I checked all floats and gauged them at 22mm.  I also replaced the fuel lines with news since the previous looked kinked.  I plan on rechecking the number one carb again tomorrow to make sure nothing is sticking.
Thanks,
