I got a clunck up front
« on: June 25, 2011, 06:16:48 AM »
When I hit bumps, I get a clunck sound from the front. I heard it last fall and figured I'd take care of it over the winter. I went through nearly everything but the forks, as the seals didn't need to be replaced and I had replaced the fork oil in September.

I thought it might be something in the stem but it steers perfectly and has no notches. I checked the bolts for "tightness" and all is well. I also thought it might be a loose bucket or the gagues hitting something, but the sound isn't right for that and I have tried to replicate it be moving things by hand with no luck.

Any ideas?

Did you check for any excess play in the caliper arm on the pivot pin? Just grab the arm and try to move it up and down on the pivot pin. I had a similar sound last year and traced it to that. I ended up having to get some really thin brass shim stock in there to solve the problem, but it did solve it.

Check the front wheel axle nut. I had a slight clunk till I tightened the nut to the proper torque.

Bob...where did you get that shim from? I could use some on my KO. Did you get 2 shims or 1? Tube shape and slid them on the shaft or how did you fix it? Oh, if you can recall the size of the shim that would help me out. Thanks...

Johnie, see if this Honda CB750 and K1 service bulletin can help:

Thanks Hin...I tried that a year ago and the space was to small for that shim. I was thinking of finding a shim in tube form to go around the pin. I think Hondaman did that tube shim fix.

John,

I had identified the source of the problem, but had nothing to measure the gap with. Consequently, I went to the hardware store and guessed.  ;) Actually, I bought two small sheets of brass sheeting in two different thicknesses. The thinner of the two worked, but I can't recall the thickness, sorry. It was quite thin, just cut it with scissors and punched a hole in the middle. It did solve the problem though.
