Chain Alignment Issue
« on: May 12, 2020, 04:22:46 PM »
Looking for some insight on chain alignment.
The frame is a k8, it had a K1 engine and am now putting in a k8 engine. The issue is the rear wheel is an older Akront rim with an early carrier or flange. I have roughly measured about 15mm difference between front and back sprockets.
Is it easier for fitment to change out the carrier to a later one ( will it fit with the older hub , 2 hole) or order the offset sprocket that Cycle X has. I think I can shim up the difference with washers on the axle for the rest. Also will be using reusing 530 chain and sprockets.
Thanks

I emailed CycleX a couple of months ago, and they don't have the offset sprockets anymore, and don't plan on making more.
Here's my thread when I had a similar issue: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=103649.0
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Thanks; your older post covered a lot of the issues.
I have just picked up an earlier wheel from a friend and the carrier fits into the older hub. Looks like everything could line up with the right size spacers. The previous setup had the rear wheel offset to the right. It should be centered now, but we'll see.

Which swingarm are you running ? Late one makes it much easier.

If you get the chain alignment right and the wheel is not quite centered you can dish the wheel to center it. Not a good design practice but it will work . I wouldn't go past 1cm of dish personally.
A dished wheel will always have the spokes, on the side that the dish is toward, tighter  than the other side. Old Norton Commandos have dished rear wheels and the rest of the rear hub is poorly designed too.

It's a 78 swingarm. I measured it against my KO and it's about an inch wider. I built this bike about 11 years ago, it's a 78 frame, it didn't have a engine and I used a K1. The original rims were pitted and my cousin had some old Akront rims which I respocked with stainless spokes on that were on a 2 hole hub (never thought about it at the time until he asked for it later). Anyway it ended up being a mix of parts. At this point I have rebuilt a 78 engine which just went in. I knew there would be alignment issues so this forum has been a great help to sort it out. I will get it all together tomorrow and see where everything lines up.

There us no alignment issues if you use the 78 swingarm, and add the wider sprocket carrier to the early hub. Then just use the 78 axle and spacers..

I recently did it with no issues, K7 motor in K5 frame.  Used the later model sprocket carrier....
