Bad starter motor?
« on: June 26, 2011, 01:05:40 AM »
So my electric start on my K6 has been very slow to turn the bike over the last few weeks and I now kick it over instead, happily!  :D
However, its still a nice luxury to have so my first assumption was that the battery was going south so I took it in to Kragen and they put their battery tester on it and it came out fine.(I think around 220 CCA's?) All the other system checks on the battery came out fine as well so I'm pretty sure its not the battery. The problems all started when I tried to start it in 1st gear with the clutch engaged and it came to life fine but since that time it makes an odd noise and cranks slowly and with great effort now. However, if the bike is plenty warm, the electric start will start it after a few slow turns.

So what's the consensus? Bad starter motor? If so, should I just replace it or rebuild? (new brushes, stator, etc.)

Have you tried jumping the start solenoid?

+1 with our Danish buddy........ 'prolly a carboned-op commutator ( where the brushes connect to the rotating part ).
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

I'm just now getting around to fixing this, once I pull the starter motor I'm expecting the brushes to be worn and "carboned-up" From the diagram below, which brushes are the common ones to go bad? 6 or 7?

If one is worn the other probably will be too. I would change both :)

#6 is the 2 x brushes..... #7 is the brush springs. Rare for brushes to be worn IMO, 'prolly just need to clean-up the commutator and the brush ' faces '  :).

where is the commutator located? is it the surface the brushes rub against?
