CB500 timing chain
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:05:44 PM »
I have a 72 CB500 that I recently acquired. I have replaced all of the wheel bearings and the steering bearings. cleaned the forks and replaced the seals. Replaced tires. The bike drives and runs good IMHO. The only things that seem to bother me is the noise from the engine(clutch rattle I presume). I adjusted the cam chain as per the service manual and now the engine has a rattle in the top end. Could I have loosened the cam chain by doing the adjustment? and should I be worried about it?
If it ain't broke yet, just give me a little more time...

maybe just re-due the cam chain adjustment again making sure you've got the "t"mark 1.4 to the timing mark and both valves of #1 cylinder are free, checked by removing the tappet caps on the top of the motor. if tight spin the crankshaft around a full cycle till they are loose to the touch. then rotate the crankshaft clockwise till the spring peg on the advancer assembly is just to the right of the timing mark. Then loosen the locknut on the cam chain tensioner, then re-tighten same nut for it is spring loaded and will automatically adjust to take up any lack of tension on the camchain.

Valve lash adjustment, Carb Sync

It will lessen the noise dramatically if these are out of spec.

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.

What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

If the carbs are not in sync at idle you will also hear the primary chain rattle.
