mixing up cb550 and cb500 forks
« on: June 24, 2011, 09:33:20 PM »
this is the situation.......

one of my bottom forks got messed up.....

so i bought another pair of forks from a forum member and he accidently sent my cb500 forks instead of the cb550.

so can i use the cb500 for bottom but all the other parts from the cb550 they look exactly the same with the naked eye other than where the rubber piece that fits in between the top and bottom of each fork is a little different.

when i try to fit the cb550 rubber on the cb500 it looks deformed since the top lip on the cb500 fork is thicker. other than that are they the same?

xsmooth69x, I believe they are.  When I did my dual disk brake conversion on my CB500, I was going to just get a CB550 right lower fork (the 500 does not have all the mounting tabs for the second disk brake caliper mount on the right fork lower).  Instead I changed both complete forks out so that I could install a Racetech cartridge emulator at some time in the future.  When I did the fork swap I rebuilt the 550 fork and compared everything between the 500 and 550 forks.  Everything looked the same to me on the fork lowers with the exception of the tabs on the right ones.  Everything else is different.  If all you need is the lower then you should be fine.  Of course there is nothing to stop you from swapping the entire forks over from a 500, just make sure you do both if you do.
