hondamatic exhaust
« on: June 28, 2011, 02:23:02 PM »
i've got a post on the hondamatic page on this as well, but that page doesn't get so many views as here. does anyone know one way or another if a stock 750 hondamatic exhaust can be used on a 750k? someone did respond to my post on the other page to say that the pipe diameter is smaller on the a exhaust. but there are split collars around the pipes where they go into the head that seem to make up for this difference.
i've got this good-looking stock exhaust, 4 into 2, upswept mufflers, off a 78 750a and i'd like to try it on my 76 750k, but it involves at least pulling the studs on the a head and also unscrewing the flanges on the k head.
searched but haven't found a really clear post on this - someone who did try it indicated problems with exhaust leaks.

I have done something similar on my 1974 K4. The stock exhaust slipped over a sleeve on the head that was attached to the head by two phillips screws per cylinder. The flange itself was a clamp style as apposed to a 2 stud.

I removed the sleeves by taking out the 2 phillips per cylinder. Then I put on a 4 into 1 from an F model which required studs, split collars and stud type flanges. I also found out that you need the copper gasket that goes in the head and the small lip flange on the exhaust pipe mates up against. I uses stainless steel allen head blots instead of studs.

I had no issues other than the bolts will require a couple of rounds of torquing after the motor gets hot. Becareful not to over torque and strip them out.

As for the diameter I did not check. this was a complete swag when I did it.

Oh yea one other note. The split sleeves and the stud flanges were off a Hondamatic.

that's great. so i have everything i need off the hondamatic - the copper gaskets are there in the head as well but stuck pretty tight. they're thin and it you try to pry them out they deform. probably i'll get those new, if available. thanks for the response.
