taking it on the chin
« on: June 29, 2011, 08:09:03 PM »
I see Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has sold MySpace.com for 35 million.  That's after paying 581 million several years ago. ;D ;D ;D

I have a feeling Mr Murfock will make a large tax deduction claim,
ie, the taxpayers will foot his loss.

How soon before they slap the cuffs on ol Rupert?  Look like his son may be the next to fall.  This is sweet watching all this unfold.  A purveyor of lies, hatred, and criminality may just get his due. ;D

While he had a lot of political connections I think it was more out of fear of getting on the wrong side of his media empire than anything else.  I doubt many of them where actually his friends, David Cameron excepted, so he will get little political cover and many will be secretly hoping for his comeuppance.  In some ways he was like a modern J.Edgar Hoover.
It seems the timing of arrest of Rebecca Brooks is suspicious.  A few days before she was to be questioned in Parliment.  I think certain police and political officials were afraid of her public testimony as she is one who can name names.

Bernie Madoff?  Martha Stewart?  I don't know if Bernie really qualifies, as his wealth was stolen, but Martha sure does.

I think there is a law in the U.S. that states a person convicted of a felony cannot own a media company so his exposure is potentially very big.  His son is definitely in jeopardy as he is on record as knowing about payments to police officials and I think the next to fall.

This is moving really fast but Rupert is in deep sh!t with potential and very likely prosecution in the U.S.  Look for him to resign or be forced out soon.  The long knives will be coming out. ;D

Srust, I totally agree with your opinion regarding Rupert Murdoch and News Corp.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a law barring felons from owning media companies.  If there had been one, I'm sure it's gone the way of the Fairness Doctrine.

His power lay in his media empire that could zero in on a politician on either side of the pond and ruin them. So they feared him. If they feared him they hated him. Now that he is missing a few of his media teeth, they can burn him at the stake and look like good people doing it.

The Federal Communications Act of 1934 created the Federal Communications Commission to regulate the airwaves, which are considered public property. The act states that the FCC should assess the "character...of the applicant to operate the station," and ensure that the "public interest...would be served by the granting" of a license.

Despite decline in the FCC's enforcement of the public interest aspect of this law, there is at least one factor that the FCC still considers before granting a license: whether the applicant has committed a felony.

In 1989, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, complained of FCC laxness in examining felons. This apparently led the FCC to issue a statement saying it would "consider all felony convictions," as well as "misdemeanors in certain circumstances," as factors in granting or renewing broadcast licenses. This announcement toughened a policy that had been weakened in 1985.

Another question.  How long can Fox News ignore and downplay the story? ;D ;D ;D

The U.S. Justice Department will begin an investigation about attempts to bribe NYPD officials and hack in 9/11 victims phones.

I doubt if the licenses are held in his name, as News Corp. is a large, publicly traded company.  Even so, I wonder what the FCC's power is to review a license once granted, especially if premised upon a felony conviction of an officer or director of the corporate license holder.

Either way, I strongly agree with everything you've written about Murdoch and Fox News.
