Need 550 wiring help
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:08:18 PM »
I'm finally at the stage of getting my wiring back on my bike and I'm running into a few issues with where wires go.  Its a 74 cb550.  With the wiring block removed from the bike, I'm cleaning up some of the nasty wires that the previous owner attempted to repair...  As is, I need some help with the following wires:
From the solenoid, I have a large gauge wire that goes to the battery.  There is also a red wire that goes to one of the plugs.  The other has a spade connector on it.  I have no idea where that goes.
At the bottom of the whole unit is a flat little part (regulator?  recitfier?) with one red wire coming off it that also has a spade connector on it.  Do those two connect?
And lastly, on the back there is a clump of wires.  I have a green wire with a 90 degree spade connector on it that isn't connected to anything.

If i could get some help with those three wires, I think I'm about set.  Thanks in advance!

For a guy that has rewired cars from scratch, this is humbling...  Wiring bikes is a whole new deal for me, so knowing what part is what is much different!

I know how you feel, went through the same doing my 550, just think of it as 1/2 a car. ;) ;D  These may help, however the colour one is a later harness, but should be helpful.  Note that there is an un-used ground (green), that sits in behind the electrical panel.

Well, that takes care of the green wire!  Just have to figure out the other two now!

I guess I'm not exactly sure what you're loking for, but maybe this will help.

Seeing that pristine wiring block, I almost want to ditch what I have.  Even after hours of cleaning up old hacks, it barely passes my standards.

i like buying new harnesses for my builds. $75 is a drop in the bucket compared to all the hassle and time tracing the hack jobs.

The harness itself is in pretty good shape.  Like I mentioned in my email, if you have the wiring block or whatever the heck its called, i'm in!  I want to ditch the pile I have!  i'm also going to look at a parts bike this weekend.  Does anyone know if the wiring for a 76 is the same as a 74?
