New guy, but only to this forum
« on: July 02, 2011, 06:49:27 PM »
Hello everyone!  I just picked up my first 750 earlier today after paying for it on Thursday, just a scant $150  ;D  Was supposedly a former "drag bike" where the rider wrecked, it sat, then came up for sale, and already had potential when I first laid eyes on the craigslist ad.  I've always been a fan of the older bikes and for $150, I figured I couldn't go wrong.... turns out I didn't  ;D

So after a few things happened on the way back to it's new home, like a wheel coming off the trailer, I decided to name it "Lucky 13" and the color scheme will be black and blue. From what I've searched, the wheels look like they're off of a CB900F, but the fender keeps throwing me for a loop, I'll have to check model numbers if I can find them.

Just a couple more pics before I start my missing parts search after tear down, but some interesting things I've found on the bike and why I didn't hesitate to give the man his asking price when I went to take a look at it....

Like Koni's on the rear

Or a Yoshimura exhaust....  :o

I hope I receive a warm welcome  ;)

Welcome Lost! Great score!!! ;D Did you get a title? Does the motor turn? Any idea what year it is? (motor/ frame serial numbers can tell this). With as many mods visible from the outside, one can only wonder about what mods have been done to the inside of the motor. In ANY case, I think you made a good investment. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Jeez, you did real good on your first try!
If it was a "drag bike" does it have big bore kit or any other "drag" goodies?

I tore into it a little more today, I couldn't leave it alone for even a day.  As far as big bores go, I'm not sure as of yet, but I'm sure I'll be looking into it soon.  I may start to replace all the gaskets since it's been sitting for a while, but I want to get it running first before going any further.  Plenty of compression as I was standing on the kicker, I'm @ ~250lbs, and thinking to myself this bike is going to kill me if I can't get it started on the first full kick when it's ready!

No title, but I can get one and checked the vin so it was clean and clear before I bought it.  Motor turns freely w/ compression resistance that is, did a vin check 1978 CB750F/F3 Super Sport (extreme luck!!), and goodies I've found thus far besides the pipe, suspension and wheels is a spacer plate for the external oil cooler.  Looking into the carbs to see if I can find some id numbers, I thought they would have been all connected near the intake via spacer plate, but it's setup as a 2-2 and the float bowls are tension springed instead of the usual screw type.  Ordering a service manual, point and condenser kit (temporary) and complete gasket kit in come Tuesday.

Thanks for the welcome.  So far, just looking at getting ideas.  I'm not a huge fan of the current suspension setup, so I'll be swapping the front end off an '06 YZF600R I have sitting in place of the current front and looking for a matching rear wheel, possibly a swing arm as well after that.  So the current setup will be for sale as soon as I locate the donor rear wheel at least.

Hey, I forgot to tell you what I always tell folks headed in the bobber/cafe direction. If you haven't already, check out the Bike of the Month thread. You'll get lots of inspiration. You might also check out the monthly nomination threads if you have time. Lots of kuhl stuff.

Some new info thanks to my Parts Unlimited road rep.  Wheels and front suspension are from a Honda CX500 Turbo, the clip-ons are Tommaselli Gold Commanders, and the carbs came from a '69 CB750K due to the individual throttle slides instead of linkage type slides.

Further tear down looking for broken pieces

Better view of the Yoshi pipe  ;D
