Maybe going to look at '74 550 - What to look for.........
« on: July 03, 2011, 12:39:55 PM »
If the bike in question is still available, I will be going to take a look at it. The picture on Craigslist shows its in rough shape. Owner just bought it a week ago and decided he doesn't have time to work on it. Its missing a battery, front brake caliper, and a couple other smaller items. Seat is trashed, paint on tank looks rough, but no dents, didn't see any side covers, tires look terrible and maybe a little surface rust on engine, headers, etc. He says the engine turns over, and wants $300 for it.

As I own and did a very minor restore on a '77 550 (it was already in good shape when I got it, I redid the piston rings, head gasket, front forks, rear end, etc.) I know a good little bit about them. But, any advice on what I really should be looking for would be appreciated. My plan is to do a full on cafe if it is worthy. Any advice about electronics, carbs, motor, etc. that I can check without completely taking it apart would be nice.

Thanks in advance.....
