Exhaust conundrum
« on: July 04, 2011, 05:11:13 PM »
I have a set of 4 into 2 aftermarket exhaust on my bike ('72 500).  One is rotten and I've cut it off so that I can weld an adapter on and then bolt on a cherry bomb glass pack.

My question is thus:

The other side of my 4 into 2 looks and feels solid.  Should I try and trade it to someone for a rotten one plus some cash (so I can cut the rotten one like I cut the other side) or should I just cut it and not worry about it.

The picture is the cut side (painted to inhibit rust), the cut off portion with the cut out rust hole (I was just going to patch it) and the intact other side (the dark section isn't rust - it's chain grease).

:) If I ask a question and forget to post model and year my bike is a '72 CB500 :)

I would just cut it.Most people looking for an exhuast would want a nice matched pair in good shape.

And you might want a matched set as well.  The back pressure provided by the exhaust has an effect on air/fuel flow through the engine. The back pressure needs to be as even as possible, and then you must sync the carbs.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Good call - I cut it to match the other one!

When I clean it up and get it on the bike I'll post pics.

what is a cherry bomb glass pack?

i just googled it but i cant figure out what it is? does it make you bike louder or is it a catalytic converter? what is the point of one of these?

It is primarily an automotive replacement muffler. As this add says "disturbing the peace since 1968" its louder than most anything. On cars they sound pretty good. This add indicates they have them small enough to fit a 4--1 collector, but probably not our individual pipes.

Back in those days we had "shorties" to hang on the stock header pipes. Striaght thru like a Cherry Bomb.

Shorties like these:

Cherry Bombs for bikes. Too loud for my tastes but better than nothing.

Yes. To your question of "what's the point", its a cheap way to replace rusted out stock mufflers and pretend that you still have a muffler. They are not legal in any sense and will require rejetting as mentioned, to run correctly.

They often carry a legend like "for off-road use only" or such.

i was thinking about just running my bike without a muffler just straight headers.

but what if i just put on of these cherry bombs on it?

im really curious now and they arnt that expensive

would this one work ?

Assuming you got the inlet dimension right, should work. Probably not any louder than what you've got, may be a more meloow tone as well. Personally I don't like the idea of having the muffler weight unsupported, relying only on the header as it exits the head.

On bikes the inlet flange of muflers is often slotted so that it will compress under a clamp to hold it on. Can't tell if the CB has that or not. You may need to cut some slots with a hack saw. Another way is to drill and screw it on. Gotta do something or it will blow off.

Car guys often weld them on.

Closer look, seems you do have a mufler hanger?

If your bike is running OK with that "muffler" it may not need rejetting.

wait my bike as in from my build thread or the bike i posted?

if i do decided to do that muffler end i will get it hung and not just let it hang hang  ;D

well maybe i lied the muffler isent really shot but i dont want a long muffler i want a shorty like a motoGP exhaust.

so i was always looking for a tip or a muffler to put on my exhaust

how do you know if you have to re jet? you just ride the bike around and you can notice?

The bike posted.

Yeah, just run it thru the gears, and it should accelerate strong and linear, no flat spots, hesitations, bogging down etc.

The shorties look nice but the cherry bombs are cheaper and yes they are quieter that straight pipes.  Basically they are a cheep glass-pack muffler for my bike. :)
