dead battery?
« on: July 04, 2011, 02:03:17 PM »
I went for a ride on my 74 cb550 today.  after about twenty miles the engine started to sputter and backfire.  I switched the fuel from on to reserved and that seemed to help for about 1/4 mile then I just lost power.  Pulled over and I had barely a dim headlight.  I guess my battery isnt charging?  I just put a new rectifier/regulator on it.  Not sure what it could be.  Just replaced the spark plugs today also.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Have you measured the battery voltage?

Battery more than 5 years old?

It has a different exhaust and a new rectifier/regulator put on it.

Could be the rectifier, this just happened to someone one here and it ended up being cooked wiring to the rec.

Could be the battery too for sure, Get a DVOM and check voltage, if its still 12.5V or even 12 id check the wiring to the Rec.
