bump I have done the conversion thang from J T sprockets and I put an 18 48 on the 78 I own (that was stock for the Ks on up threw I think the F did cheat and put a 17 on the front (cheap horsepower) but anyway  17 45 18 48 was stock on them  I do beleive there was no diff in counter shafts from K to F just a matter of what you want for a power band the  one down on front will make you  quicker but you will lose on top end  to younger brother  20 some years to beat me  750 to 750 and thats how he did it 17 48 that 1/8th mile 1/4 mile I get him  myself I like the stretched out power band and it aint no slouch good luck
seven fifty four ever its not the destination its the journey Ive been collecting these old dinasours for 33 years . they are quite an ICON

I believe Metzelers are one of the best tyres and not too expensive.

has anyone here run any of the modern avons?
i see a lot of vintage bikes at the track with avons, but haven't paid attention to which model etc...as i'm trying to figure out my own tire selection on the 600.

Hi Kayemcee,

The input from Qtrhoss7 is spot on.  Honda went to larger sprockets to slow the chain speed down. With the smaller ones they found a lot of broken chains and smashed gearbox cases.

The Avon tyres you see on classics at race tracks are probably race rubber and are marked not for road use.
We use them on the track and they are good and sticky.

It's up to you if you take them on the road, but I have never heard of anyone being prosicuted for running on race rubber.

Good luck,  Sam Green.

I've gone through two sets of Avon Super Venoms on my 850 Commando. They don't last very long but they do stick!

thanks for the heads up.  are the super venom's stickier than the bt45's?  what year is your commando?  is it stock?  almost bought a project 750 commando last week but someone beat me to it!

The Commando is a '74. Its been with me since '75. I don't know how the Avons compare to the bt45s, although I've gotten some good deals on tires on Ebay. But tread carefully! I have another Norton project waiting in the wings but I just can't over this newfound love for these SOHC Hondas.
My son has a sweet '76 550 Supersport and I just aquired a '73 350F w/stock pipes. Now I go and look at every one I here about. The wife is getting nervous

thanks all.
i think i'm going to go with the battleaxes.  although it seems like the avons are stickier, this bike won't see the track, and i'll be riding it almost every day.
it's been sitting for 10 years exactly.  front and back brakes are sticking.  i'm going to have to go through everything.  luckily i did the carbs before putting it away, so hopefully they're good.....
i recently saw a pic of a '77 or '78 supersport with cbr 600 f2 forks/wheels and man did it look cool.  has anyone in this group done that?

Isn't the recommended pressure on the side of the tire? Might it not vary slightly on new/replacement tires?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I think it is. Thats the problem though. Manufactures put on 1 figure and the tires have another. I think you should just stick in between. Kind of compromise.

Hello, New Member here. I'm restoring my 1976 CB750K, and so far it runs and looks good. I needed new tires and tubes among other things, and I ordered a set of Dunlop K70 Gold tires for it. I thought it would be cool to have 1976 style tires on a 1976 bike.
I've received some bad feelings from every body I've told this, saying I should get some newer, safer tires. I'm not going to be racing, or hod-rodding around, so what do you people think?  Another reason I chose the tires was the price, under $50 each.
