Front wheel bearing
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:49:26 PM »
I believe my front wheel bearing is going out on my CB750 K6 but I wanted to know if there are multiple ways to diagnose it. Right now, if I pull the clutch in and coast I can noise and vibration coming from the front wheel hub. I'm pretty certain the front brake isn't dragging so is there another way to confirm that the bearing is bad before I pull it apart? Are front wheel bearings prone to go bad on 750's? Do I need any special tools to pull the bearing(s)? Is there more than one?

Here is a blowup. Can someone confirm for me what parts I'll be needing?

If you get the front of the ground  and slowly spin the wheel you might be able to feel it, rough at spots, maybe some noise. You might have to put some clearance in the brake pad if it's faint. Bearing kits are cheap though, but atleast on 400's you need a special tool to remove the nut. There's a factory online manual here if it helps. I would replace them regardless. I've seen trailers loose bearings.

Get a wheel bearing kit.

Easy to change them. There's several threads here about removing the retaining ring and changing bearings.

And if the front bearings are shot you can bet the back ones are too.

Any bike that's 35 years old needs new wheel bearings regardless of the mileage, imho.

Agree with ranger...any 35 year old bike can use new bearings. Bearing technology is better and you can get sealed now. Many of the old bikes did not have sealed bearings. I changed all mine out for piece of mind. I did not want to think about it at 65 MPH. Easy enough to do too.

That bearing kit you linked to says that its for the right side? Also, can that kit be used for the rear as well?

The kit is for the front. Both bearings are identical. I think by "right seal" they mean both sides of the bearing are sealed.

Here's the link to the kit for the rear:  http://www.z1enterprises.com/Wheel-Bearing--Seal-Kit-Rear--Honda-CB650-CB750-2799.aspx

Thanks Ranger, for the rear I don't see that the K6 is covered, does it matter?

The bearings are the same.    6302, 6304, 6305 bearings. The new bearings are better than stock as they are sealed on both sides.
