Tires
« on: July 08, 2011, 08:43:17 AM »
Thanks all with the website to purchase the tires from... Major question now.. for my CB550k 78', I was informed to get the 100/90H-19 for the front Bridgstone SS spitfire and a 110/90H-18 for the rear... Is this correct because a local dealer told me i need a 90/90 for upfront........Please help as I am able to order them today and get them shipped today....

The tech site lists the tire as Rear 3.75 x 18in. The manual would probably be more specific concerning profile info.

3.75in converts approximately to 95.25mm if that helps you.

Other people can probably chime in with 550's to help.

Here are the spec's from the Avon website. As you see, the 90/90-19 and 3.25-19 have the same recommended minimum rim size, 1.85", which is the width of the stock 550 rims (front and rear both), and same width. The 3.25-19 is slightly larger in diameter (abt 1/2 inch) so running a 90/90 would throw your speedo off a bit, but they aren't that accurate anyway. The 100/90 technically requires a wider rim than our bikes have, but I know plenty of members use that size anyway.

size     rec rim (in)   alt rim (in) min/max   width (mm)  dia (mm)
    3.25-19       2.15                1.85 - 2.50                    98              664
  90/90-19       2.15                1.85 - 2.50                    99              647
100/90-19       2.50                2.15 - 2.75                   109             671

The stock 3.25-19 front is not hard to come by (it was a common size front in the 70's and early 80's), but the 3.75-18 rear is virtually impossible to find. The 110/90-18 is an acceptable compromise. Some members recommend a 4.00-18, but its wider and larger around than the 110/90 and even though they have the same minimum rim size, I would stick with the narrower tire. Here's the specs for the 2 different rear tire options:

size     rec rim (in)   alt rim (in) min/max   width (mm)  dia (mm)
     4.00-18       2.50            2.15 - 3.00                 116              671
 100/90-18       2.50            2.15 - 2.75                 108              642

Ya i was able to get a hold of a shop that can do the Avon riders for 410... tires, tubes, and rubber thing around rim...

they also offered the IRC GS11- installed for 364..... They will also adjust chain.. Sounds dumb as they were going to charge me 45 to adjust my chain if I didnt not get tires....

Both tires are to factory spec... Any suggestions if the tire itself is worth it and if either brand is the one to go with...

Thanks

I've had the Roadriders on two very different bikes, my 17hp 380 pound Enfield 500 Single and my 125hp, 480lb FJ1200.

The tires worked well on the FJ, but they were a revalation on the Enfield compared to the stock tires, which were a knock off of the Bridgestones that came stock on our bike. Not only did the handling vastly improve, so did the ride quality.

Overall I highly recommend them. They are fairly priced, and after 5,000 miles on my FJ they showed very little wear.

I would not pay $410 for two tires! or $364.

Have you shopped www.motorcyclesuperstore.com ?

I bought 2 Bridgestone Spitfires, 2 tubes and 2 rim trips for less than $200. Then paid a local guy in a small bike shop $50 bucks to install.

I would run from any shop that charges $45 to adjust a chain! It literally takes 10 min.

Thanks Steve... So what would be the proper tire size, meaning do I go with a 3.25x19 for the front and a 3.75x18 for the rear? I want to order them with tube and the rubber rim thing..... Yeah I know embarrassing, I still call items which I do not know the proper name the thing...

Did you take off the rims and bring them into the shop for that price? I really want to learn how to do the work on my bike but I am worried I may mess her up... Literally why I have a parts bike KZ650 to learn how to work on and take apart.... I work on the one KZ, remove parts that I need for my other and go from there..

I do not have another 550 to experiment on....

Here's what I bought for my 550:

Frt: 90/90-19" $57   http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/396/6020/ITEM/Bridgestone-S11-Spitfire-Sport-Touring-Blackwall-Front-Tire.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

Back:  110/90-18" $66  http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/396/6018/ITEM/Bridgestone-S11-Spitfire-Sport-Touring-Blackwall-Rear-Tire.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

I bought these after reading many positive reviews on this forum. I know you will be happy. You don't have the proper tire irons to do the job - let a pro do it, but not the Honda dealer.
I brought my bike to the small local shop and he did it, well worth the $50.

Good Luck.

Thanks man, you have been a huge help... Curious though, how did you learn so much about bikes? Is it what you do for a profession?

How can I post a bike of my bike like you have under your name?

No, I'm not a "Pro", I just have a passion for these old bikes! I have four bikes now, just bought another CB750 today! Plus I like to help "new" guys like you, one day you'll do the same.

Go to the top of this page, click on profile, then forum profile. Click on "upload an avatar" and upload a pic.
I need to change my avatar, I sold that 550 last week!

The new bike is the one you posted pics of with the fairing and then without correct?

I am taking mine off including luggage this week... I have to look into Wisconsin law to see if I can drive during the day without turn signals as I have to find some to order...

I run 120 /90/18 dunlop D440 on my cb550 but mine is a 74 and has a little more horse then the ones that followed but i can assure you that i have never paid more than 180.00 for these premium tires and they ride so much nicer than the stock size much more confident ride as the D404 are a very sticky tire and the wider size makes for a nice ride plus the cb550 frame is rigid enough to handle it but they are so sticky that i would recomend bead screws to keep from spinning the rim in the tire
