our poor dog
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:58:01 AM »
our staffy has to have his toe removed next wednesday, hes had like a sore/cut pad for a week and a half and it wont heal, its now starting to come through on to the top of his foot,so the vet says its coming off because its a tumor he thinks 90% sure, hes a happy go lucky boy who never complains,we get a pathology test back on monday,my wife hates my sense of humour,,i asked if i can keep the toe for a key ring.

thanks peter,we love our dog,as anyone with close pets does,im always the one to say she will be right ,and it will,my wife is a little upset,we get him back the same day he goes in for the operation which is a lot better than some people have had to go through for their pets.

Praying things go well for your dog Dave. My dog Cocoa ( a Rat Terrier, who has found about 5 or 6 snakes in my yard, in the 2 1/2 or 3 yrs we have had her) She got bitten by a Copperhead (she's found 3 of these, over time) last Thursday evening, I got her to the Vet Early Friday morning, got her taken care of and now she is like it never happened. She got it in the lower part of her neck and she swelled up there and the lower part of her snout. She was miserable and we were so worried about her. Didn't really care for her, when my Wife Brenda agreed to take her and another one, from a friend who had found them as strays. But, it didn't take long for me to take to them. Now, with Brenda gone and the other one gone, Cocoa is really quite special. So, I KNOW the feeling you all have for Yours and you all will be in MY thoughts.

We have border collies. A few years ago ours had a reaction to her annual booster shot. We spent thousands of dollars at a critical care veterinary hospital before we had to let her go. It was money we couldn't afford to spend but what else can you do? They are family after all. Glad you had good news.

Yeah, he's a good looking dog. I think the deafness is permanent mate, its a shame but it doesn't seem to bother him much. Spent a bloody fortune trying to fight the infection but it all seems to no avail....   He's 13 now and has a little limp in his front right leg. He grew up on a large property chasing roos and dingo's, he's had a good well loved life.... ;)

Wow, we just had a similar experience with one of our two mutts. Our rottweiler 'mix' doggie had a growth on her leg that had been getting bigger over time. So, it was off to the Vet's last week for his opinion. Well, five hundred bucks later ( ouch  :o ) it's removed and 'Heidi' is stitched-up. Turned out to be not cancerous, so thankful for that. Our doggies  are 'non speaking' kids to us, I must admit !!

That's her as a baby, about 1 month after we found her in the neighborhood........

That is great news!  I had to put my 16 year old Dog down last Friday. It was the right thing to do, it just hurts real bad. Cherish the time with your Dog.

Gosh Bobby sorry to hear about that. 16 years is a long time to have such a close friend leave. I went through that with my yellow lab a few years ago and it is hard. Only a dog owner can understand. To ease my pain I started to volunteer at the local animal shelter to get my dog "fix". Now I have 2 retrievers that I adopted from there. Got one 2 months after Dusty passed and the other a year later. Never thought I would have 2, but they love each other and get along great. I still volunteer at the shelter every Saturday. It is great to see a dog go home. Here is a pic of my 2 girls Hannah and Kelly.

Nice looking Dogs Johnie. This will be the second time for us and we will give it time. I have a whole bunch of Dog beds I bought as he became more lame, along with lots of  food and treats. I am going to bring them down to the no kill shelter I got him from. The wife is afraid I will see one I like and come back with one. If she went down we would also have two.  At this point we are not ready, we have some healing to do.

Agreed Bobby...take some time. I walk my dogs every AM rain or shine. With Dusty it was pretty hard to still walk as someone would say "where is Dusty" and I still have a hard time talking about him. I will tell you what I did though...his ashes are here and he will go with me someday. Here is a pic of him in front of the Wing. Our shelter is a no kill shelter too. Those are wonderful places and I found out shelters get a bad rap as people really do not understand them. I never thought about getting a dog from a shelter but instead a breeder. Big mistake...we get many very good quality dogs there. We do training to get them adoptable and love to see them go home with a new owner. We have vets that donate surgery time too. They are much better than people realize. Sympathies to you and your wife Bobby. It to shall pass...but you will forever miss him which is a good thing.

having a dog put to sleep is hard but the right thing to do,most of us have had to do it i think,i had a very old dog that had calcification of the spine and it was a relief to see him with no discomfort afterwards, buddy went for a checkup again and only has to have 20 days of these pills, sneaking them in his food is the problem now.

They are amazing how they know you're trying to give them tablets - my rottie that i had (been gone some 12 years now) would always know, despite the best devised tricks! So I'd risk fingers and hands and force them into her mouth and do all the throat rubbing things that the vets say to do - several minutes later out would pop this slightly disolved tablet....if it wasn't so frustrating it'd be funny. Even grinding them up and putting them in bicsuits/meat etc would make her turn her nose up at it.
As an aside, we've got an 18yo cat that is behaving more and more like a kitten - bit of dementia we think, and whilst it's entertaining, we know it's the downward slide. Might look at another dog when the time comes, they are such good company.

You guys ever try using pill pockets for feeding pills to your dogs?  Our vet sells them ... you just put the pill inside the pocket (treat) and feed it to the dog.  The pill pockets work quite well.  Our springer spaniel use to be able to pick a pill out of any food or treat we fed her .. even when coated in peanut butter  ... would find the pill on the floor.

The two times I shed a tear the hardest were when I had to put my Sharpeis down.  Real men do cry  ::)

his morning one half is easy,he has a raw chicken wing,i cut them into three or four pieces,i just slip it under some of the skin,i think when he finds something crunchy in food thats not meant to be crunchy he gets wise,he watches us so we cant even let him see the packet off pills!or talk about them!

Funny eh. I used to say to mine "time for ya tablet" - she'd take off and not let me catch her. It was a bit of a game, but my fault, it didn't achieve what i wanted....haha.
I ended up sticking them in pieces of steak which she inevitably swallowed whole anyway. (Same principle as what Cranky is talking about).

I let mine see the pill and tell him it's mine he can't have it. After he begs a little he gets it. It helps that he is spoiled rotten. 1/2 bloodhound and 1/2 english mastiff. At 7 months he is about the size of a full grown pure bloodhound.
