Terminal Cleaner
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:07:37 PM »
Okay Im old school and maybe you kids know this #$%* but up until now I have always done the following to clean electrical terminals.

1) dip the terminals in muriatic acid then wash off with water and then spray with electrical contact cleaner.  The results are great! however the technology is low and the process not user friendly.

I have since tried a more user friendly approach

2) Spary the terminals and connectors with CRC Battery Cleaner and leave for several hours then wash with water and clean with electrical contact cleaner.

This new method gives the same results and is more user friendly.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a plan, thanks of the tip.

CRC makes a lot of spray cleaners and such.  I have been using the 336 cleaner for years.  Great stuff.

Battery cleaner is the stuff you spray on your battery top to neutralize the acid and clean the battery , you then wash it off with water.
It does the trick but after several test area's I did find the Muriatic acid was better but I will stick to the battery cleaner.

I use a small wire brush, shaped like a toothbrush.  You can buy them for a couple of bucks at Lowe's, steel or brass bristles.  Compared to juices there is no waiting and the brush does a good job.

PS:  Somewhere in my mind I asked myself this question as I read your post:  What happens when muriatic acid and sulfuric acid come in contact with each other?  Is it like when M-acid comes in contact with chlorine?

The fumes from M-acid will peel chrome.........don't ask how I know........just look at my front fender and rim after a bottle of M-acid leaked in my shed about 10-feet away from my bike.

Also M acid if in your garage will rust every single steel/iron thing in there...I have a jug around, but I store it OUTSIDE the garage.
