Upgrading brakes on a '76 Supersport
« on: June 22, 2011, 11:37:40 am »
New to the forum, but no to CB750's. I am looking to upgrade my brakes. I currently have dual disc up front, and want to convert to Lockheed calipers. The mounting holes for stock forks is very funky, and I was thinking of using later F model forks to make the conversion easier. Has any one out there done this. It seems pretty straight forward to me, but I want to make sure Im not missing something. I am also not sure about the axle size and length being compatible with my Lester mag and the newer forks. I would like to stay with 35mm forks so my triply clamp selection is still good. Any input is appreciated.

the later model F forks are also 35mm so they will slip right into your existing triples.  However, they used a different brake rotor.  You might consider switching to a Comstar front wheel and the it would be easy.

No offense to anyone who digs them, but comstars are not my style. I love the muscle look of the Lester mags. If the later forks will go into the trees, then all I will need to worry about is which axle to use. Are the axle diameters on later 750's and 69-76 CB's the same diameter and length? If there is a compatibility issue, how tough would it be to turn one on a lathe? And what steel would be appropriate?

my guess is that the original axle will fit.  What you might run into for problems though is that the brake rotor that fits your spoked wheel is thicker and maybe not the same diameter as the one that is designed to work with the newer model CB750 brake calipers.  I have successfully drilled the the Comstar brake rotor (five hole) to fit the 4 hole CB400F front hubs.  Haven't tried to do that will a 6 hole CB750 hub though.

Here is my setup plan.
1. 35mm forks from a '79-'80 cb750 Supersport with axle
2. New Lockheed calipers
3. Lester mag with thinned rotors that is already on my '76 Supersport
4. Custom fabbed caliper brackets and new SS brake lines

If the axle from the later forks will fit my earlier wheel, and it sounds like it will, this should be a fairly easy swap as long as I can get the caliper to rotor spacing right.

Any thoughts on the compatibility of these parts?

Has no one out there ever put Lockheed calipers on a cb750?
